Undead Labs Ends Support for State of Decay 2 to Focus on Highly-Anticipated State of Decay 3

State of Decay fans, it’s the end of an era. Developer Undead Labs has announced that Update 38 will be the final content patch for State of Decay 2 as they shift their focus to the eagerly awaited State of Decay 3. After nearly six years and almost 40 content updates since its release on PC and Xbox One in 2018, State of Decay 2 is wrapping up with some notable last additions. Update 38 is set to address long-standing issues, implement quality-of-life improvements, and make permanently available previously seasonal content, such as Winter outfits and the popular Wizard Van.

State of Decay 2 will remain playable and part of the Xbox Game Pass library, ensuring that new and returning players can continue to enjoy the zombie-survival experience the series is known for. Undead Labs expressed their appreciation for the State of Decay community, saying, “We know you love this world we’ve created and the amazing community you’ve helped build. While you’ve enjoyed State of Decay 2 for many years, you may have heard that we are also hard at work on the next evolution of the franchise!”

Microsoft initially announced State of Decay 3 back in 2020 at its Xbox Games Showcase, though details were scarce. Recently, however, anticipation has reignited with the release of a new trailer, offering glimpses into what’s next for the franchise. Although there is still no confirmed release date, Undead Labs has hinted at exciting new gameplay elements, including a groundbreaking “shared world feature.” Partnering with Obsidian—the creative minds behind Fallout: New Vegas, Grounded, and Avowed—the developers aim to deliver a more versatile online co-op experience. Microsoft revealed that State of Decay 3 will build on shared save technology, with a co-op world allowing multiple players to jointly own and explore the game’s open environment.

As the series continues to evolve, State of Decay 3 looks to push the boundaries of zombie survival, promising an immersive and flexible experience that will mark the next step for the franchise. Keep an eye out for more updates as we learn what lies ahead for this community-driven world.
