Earlier this year, the gaming community almost witnessed a major crossover between two of the industry’s biggest franchises—Call of Duty and Halo. According to a report from Call of Duty outlet Charlie Intel, plans for a collaboration between these iconic series were in the works but were ultimately canceled before coming to fruition.
Crossover History and Missed Opportunities
Call of Duty has built a reputation for its crossovers in recent years, introducing cosmetics from various intellectual properties across its different installments. Modern Warfare (2019) was the first to include notable crossover items such as the Skin Crawler from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Billy the Puppet from Saw. However, a partnership with Halo, one of Microsoft’s flagship franchises, would have been a groundbreaking move.
While Call of Duty has embraced collaborations with external properties, Halo has traditionally kept its customization options focused on its own universe, particularly the Spartan armor. A Halo crossover would have introduced Halo-themed cosmetics to Modern Warfare 3, potentially including Operator Skins, Weapon Blueprints, and other themed content. This collaboration could have been the first time Halo ventured into crossover cosmetics with another franchise.
Collaboration Canceled: What Went Wrong?
Details surrounding the cancelation remain unclear, but Charlie Intel tweeted about the potential crossover, confirming that it was indeed in consideration earlier this year. Rumors had swirled in the gaming community, but with the collaboration now scrapped, fans of both franchises are left wondering what could have been. While the exact reasons behind the decision to cancel remain undisclosed, the possibilities of such a crossover were undoubtedly exciting for players.
One potential factor that adds intrigue is the fact that Call of Duty publisher, Activision, was acquired by Microsoft—the same company behind the Halo franchise. This acquisition opens the door for future collaborations between the two, suggesting that while the idea may have been shelved for now, a crossover is still possible down the line.
Future Prospects for Halo in Call of Duty
Although the Halo crossover didn’t make it into Modern Warfare 3, there’s speculation that the concept may find its way into Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which is set to release later this month. With Activision continuing to offer themed cosmetics in upcoming games, the chance for Halo to make an appearance isn’t off the table just yet.
If the crossover were to happen, it could go beyond just cosmetics. The potential for a Halo-themed game mode, iconic weapons, and more could bring fresh content to Call of Duty. Conversely, elements from Call of Duty might even appear in Halo Infinite, which has not been as active in collaboration efforts compared to Modern Warfare 3.
For now, players will have to keep an eye on future updates. As confirmed collaborations with Little Caesars and Monster Energy will roll out for Black Ops 6, the door remains open for more ambitious crossovers, possibly featuring Halo’s legendary Master Chief.
