Ten years after its original release, Mafia 3 has received a major update, bringing improved performance, numerous bug fixes, and native support for modern consoles. Developer Hangar 13 and publisher 2K Games have given players another reason to return to New Bordeaux.
The surprise update arrived on October 8, 2026, introducing 60 FPS gameplay on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. PC players have also received a substantial collection of fixes addressing problems that have affected the game for years.
Mafia 3 Finally Gets 60 FPS on Modern Consoles
One of the biggest improvements is the introduction of native 60 FPS gameplay for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Previously, console players were limited to 30 FPS, even when playing through backward compatibility. The new versions offer smoother driving, combat, and exploration throughout New Bordeaux.
Most real-time cutscenes also benefit from the increased frame rate. However, certain pre-rendered cinematic sequences remain locked at 30 FPS.
The update also improves visual consistency. Players should encounter fewer problems with lighting, textures, and vegetation appearing incorrectly throughout the open world.
Better stability and reduced visual glitches should make the experience more enjoyable, particularly during high-speed chases and intense firefights.
A Free Upgrade for Existing Mafia 3 Owners
There is more good news for players who already own Mafia 3.
Existing owners of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions can upgrade to the native current-generation editions without purchasing the game again.
The upgraded Mafia III: Definitive Edition includes the original campaign alongside its three story expansions:
- Faster, Baby!
- Stones Unturned
- Sign of the Times
Additional content includes the Family Kick-Back Pack and the Judge, Jury, & Executioner Weapons Pack.
New players can also purchase the Definitive Edition separately. The game has received a substantial promotional discount alongside the anniversary update.
Longstanding Mission Bugs Finally Addressed
Performance improvements are only part of this anniversary update.
Hangar 13 has also addressed numerous problems that could interrupt missions or prevent players from progressing through the story.
Some of these issues have frustrated players since the game’s original release in 2016.
The PC update specifically addresses progression problems involving missions such as Get Enzo Conti and Kill Tommy Marcano, alongside issues affecting the game’s epilogue.
Several crashes have also received attention, including problems triggered by certain driving sequences, environmental interactions, and achievement unlocks.
Companion characters and NPCs should now behave more reliably during missions. Previously, certain characters could become stuck or fail to perform actions necessary for progression.
These improvements should reduce the chances of players having to restart missions because of technical problems.
Achievement and Trophy Fixes Are Also Included
Achievement hunters have another reason to revisit Mafia 3.
The update addresses several problems involving achievement and trophy tracking. Some players previously encountered situations where their progress failed to register correctly.
This was particularly frustrating for completionists attempting to unlock every achievement.
The developers have improved tracking across multiple activities, helping ensure that completed objectives register as intended.
Other improvements address combat encounters, vehicle behavior, loading transitions, and general gameplay stability.
Mafia 3 PC Players Haven’t Been Forgotten
Although the 60 FPS console upgrade is receiving most of the attention, PC players have also received an update.
Unlike the console editions, the PC version already supported higher frame rates. Therefore, this update focuses primarily on stability and gameplay improvements.
The patch addresses crashes, mission progression issues, NPC behavior, and problems with the interface.
Several localization issues have also been corrected, including missing or corrupted text in certain languages.
Additional improvements target menus and HUD elements, making information clearer and more consistent throughout the game.
A Second Chance for One of the Most Divisive Mafia Games
When Mafia 3 launched in October 2016, it received a mixed reception.
Players praised its storytelling, soundtrack, atmosphere, and portrayal of 1968 America. However, repetitive missions and technical problems prevented the game from reaching its full potential.
The story follows Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam War veteran seeking revenge against the Italian Mafia after a devastating betrayal.
Set in the fictional city of New Bordeaux, the game explores organized crime, corruption, and racial tensions during one of America’s most turbulent periods.
Despite its shortcomings, Mafia 3 developed a dedicated following over the years.
Its strong narrative and memorable characters helped it stand apart from other open-world crime games.
Could Mafia 2 Be Next?
The unexpected Mafia 3 update has also raised questions about the future of Mafia 2: Definitive Edition.
Previous reports suggested that both games could receive native current-generation upgrades. However, 2K Games has not officially announced a similar update for Mafia 2.
For now, fans will have to wait and see whether the publisher plans to give another classic entry the same treatment.
Better Late Than Never
A decade is a long time to wait for major technical improvements, especially for a game that struggled with performance and bugs at launch.
Nevertheless, the latest Mafia 3 update is a welcome surprise.
The combination of 60 FPS gameplay, improved stability, and fixes for longstanding issues makes this one of the most significant updates the game has received in years.
For returning players, it offers an opportunity to experience Lincoln Clay’s story with fewer technical frustrations. For newcomers, it makes Mafia 3 a more appealing entry point into the franchise.
Ten years later, New Bordeaux still has unfinished business.
