A forgotten piece of Polish gaming history has returned after nearly three decades. Blaster!, also known as Katharsis, is officially back on PC, giving retro gaming fans another opportunity to experience a sci-fi arcade shooter originally released in 1997.
Publisher TopWare Interactive brought the restored game to Steam and GOG on October 9, 2026. Priced at approximately $8, the new edition aims to preserve the original experience while introducing improvements for modern computers.
Unlike many modern remasters, Blaster! focuses on keeping its original identity rather than rebuilding the game from scratch.
Blaster! Returns With Improved Graphics and Audio
The new release features an extensive restoration of the original MS-DOS game. Players can expect improved visuals, enhanced audio, and refreshed cinematic sequences.
However, those who prefer the authentic 1997 experience can disable the enhancements and enjoy the game closer to its original presentation.
TopWare Interactive has emphasized that preservation remains the primary goal. Instead of dramatically changing the gameplay, the publisher wants to introduce the forgotten shooter to a new generation.
The restoration also includes two additional bonus levels and a new skin for the Eagle spaceship.
Players looking for more customization can purchase the Deluxe Edition, which adds four additional Eagle skins, four music tracks, bonus pickups that provide extra firepower, and four digital wallpapers.
Classic Arcade Action Across 20 Levels
Blaster! follows the traditional side-scrolling shooter formula that dominated arcades throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
Players control a heavily armed spaceship while fighting through waves of alien enemies. Survival requires quick reactions, accurate shooting, and the ability to avoid incoming attacks.
The original campaign contains 20 levels, divided into two distinct environments.
The first ten missions take place underwater, while the remaining ten move the action into space. Although the environments change, the core gameplay remains consistent throughout the adventure.
Boss encounters introduce another interesting feature. Rather than maintaining the traditional side-scrolling perspective, these battles shift toward confrontations with 3D monsters.
For a game released in 1997, the combination of traditional arcade shooting and perspective-changing boss fights offered an interesting twist on the genre.
A Forgotten Piece of Polish Gaming History
Beyond its gameplay, Blaster! represents an interesting chapter in Poland’s video game industry.
The original game came from Metropolis Software, a Polish development studio that later became part of CD Projekt.
CD Projekt acquired the developer in 2008, but Metropolis Software eventually closed in 2009.
Despite its place in Polish gaming history, Katharsis never achieved significant international recognition. One major obstacle was the lack of official English-language support, which limited its accessibility outside Poland.
The restored release now gives international players an opportunity to discover a title that remained largely unknown for almost 30 years.
It also highlights an important part of video game preservation. While major franchises regularly receive remasters and remakes, smaller releases often disappear as operating systems and hardware evolve.
Without restoration projects, many of these games risk becoming increasingly difficult to experience.
Retro Game Preservation Continues to Grow
The return of Blaster! follows a broader movement toward bringing older and lesser-known games back to modern platforms.
Other forgotten titles, including Vixen 357, have also received renewed attention as publishers explore their back catalogs.
These releases might not attract the same attention as a major AAA remake, but they serve an important purpose.
Gaming history consists of more than the biggest commercial successes. Smaller studios, experimental projects, and regional releases also helped shape the industry.
Preserving those games gives players a better understanding of how gaming evolved across different countries and generations.
Blaster! is another example of how a relatively obscure title can receive a second opportunity without abandoning what made it distinctive.
Blaster! Is Available Now on Steam and GOG
Blaster! launched on October 9, 2026, for modern PCs through Steam and GOG.
The restored edition costs approximately $8, making it an affordable option for players interested in classic arcade shooters.
Early user reviews remain limited, so it is still too soon to determine how the wider community will receive the restoration.
Nevertheless, its return is welcome news for retro gaming enthusiasts and supporters of video game preservation.
Not every forgotten game needs a complete remake. Sometimes, making the original playable again is exactly what gaming history needs.
