Another promising game has been canceled before it ever got the chance to fully launch. KRAFTON and PUBG Studios have officially ended development on PUBG: Black Budget, the upcoming extraction shooter set within the PUBG universe.
This one particularly stings. Black Budget had been on our radar for quite some time, and its combination of PUBG gunplay with a first-person PvPvE extraction format looked genuinely promising.
Even worse, players were testing the game only a few months ago.
PUBG: Black Budget Development Has Officially Ended
PUBG Studios confirmed that development of PUBG: Black Budget has officially ended.
According to the studio, the decision followed an internal review of the project’s current state and its future direction. The team concluded that continuing with the existing direction would not allow it to create an experience players could enjoy over the long term.
As a result, PUBG Studios decided to cancel the project rather than continue toward a full release.
No single technical problem, financial reason, or piece of player feedback has been identified as the cause of the cancellation.
Players Were Still Testing Black Budget in June
The timing makes the announcement particularly surprising.
Black Budget had already reached the stage where PUBG Studios was allowing players outside the company to experience it. Its first major Closed Alpha took place in December 2025.
A second Closed Alpha followed from June 26 until June 29, 2026.
At that point, PUBG Studios still appeared committed to bringing the extraction shooter to market. The developer described player activity and feedback as valuable information that would help refine the game on its “road to launch.”
Only a few months later, that road has abruptly ended.
That is a remarkably quick change for a project that had already progressed into multiple external testing phases.
Black Budget Was Supposed to Expand the PUBG Universe
PUBG: Black Budget wasn’t simply another version of PUBG: Battlegrounds.
Instead, KRAFTON wanted to use the project to push the franchise into another genre.
Black Budget was being developed as a first-person tactical extraction shooter with PvPvE gameplay. Players would repeatedly enter a mysterious island, complete objectives, gather resources, survive encounters, and attempt to extract.
That would have placed the game in an increasingly competitive extraction shooter market while still using the wider PUBG universe as its foundation.
KRAFTON had also discussed Black Budget in previous investor materials as part of its wider plans to expand PUBG beyond traditional battle royale.
For players who enjoy PUBG’s weapons and combat but wanted something different from its battle royale structure, Black Budget offered an interesting alternative.
Unfortunately, we will now never see what the finished version could have become.
PUBG Studios Thanks Closed Alpha Players
PUBG Studios thanked everyone who participated in the Closed Alpha tests and provided feedback during development.
The work may not completely disappear either.
According to the developer, lessons learned during Black Budget’s development and testing will be carried forward into future projects. PUBG Studios also plans to continue exploring new opportunities within the PUBG universe.
However, that does not mean Black Budget itself will return.
Development has ended, and there is currently no indication that KRAFTON intends to revive the project under another studio or name.
Another Promising Game That Never Made It
Game cancellations are always disappointing, but Black Budget feels especially frustrating because players had already been able to play it.
This wasn’t merely a concept buried somewhere inside a studio.
PUBG Studios had conducted multiple Closed Alpha tests, collected player feedback, and publicly talked about improving the game on its road toward launch.
Now, only months after its June test, the entire project is gone.
We had been looking forward to this one ourselves. PUBG: Black Budget seemed like an opportunity to take the franchise somewhere different without simply producing another battle royale.
Sadly, we will never know what the finished game could have been.
For everyone who participated in those Closed Alpha tests, those few days with Black Budget have now become the only playable glimpse of a PUBG game that will never officially release.
