Leaked Screenshot Reveals What Ubisoft’s Canceled Project U Looked Like

Ubisoft’s canceled Project U has resurfaced after a leaked screenshot appeared online. The image gives players another look at the co-op shooter that never made it to release.

Also known internally as Project Pathfinder, Project U first became public in September 2022. Ubisoft described it as a session-based cooperative shooter and invited selected PC players in Europe to take part in early testing. Reports later suggested that Ubisoft also planned console versions.

The project remained in development for years, but Ubisoft reportedly struggled with its long-term replayability. Those concerns allegedly resulted in a major reboot during 2024. However, that effort did not save the game.

Project U eventually appeared among several canceled Ubisoft projects in an early 2026 leak. Now, players have received another glimpse at what Ubisoft had been building.

Project U Screenshot Shows Its Gameplay Systems

Twitter user Kran27_ shared what appears to be a screenshot from a Project U playtest. The post quickly attracted attention online, receiving more than 10,000 likes.

The screenshot mainly focuses on the game’s HUD, but it reveals several gameplay mechanics. Players seemingly had access to standard shooting alongside melee attacks and movement abilities.

A dash and midair glide also appear among the available actions. These mechanics suggest that Ubisoft wanted movement to play an important role during combat.

The HUD also contains dedicated Ability and Ultimate options. Healing appears to have been another major mechanic, while an Eagle View option suggests that players could scan or observe their surroundings.

Project U also seems to have included some form of progression during gameplay. The screenshot shows leveling options, although it does not reveal how extensive the progression system would have become.

Visually, the playable character has a colorful and somewhat cartoonish design. The environment also resembles the type of large island maps commonly seen in modern multiplayer games.

However, the age of the screenshot remains unclear. It could originate from the original 2022 testing period or from the version developed after the reported 2024 reboot.

Ubisoft Reportedly Reworked Project U After Years of Development

Project U reportedly spent around five years in development before Ubisoft decided to rethink the project.

One of the biggest problems allegedly involved replayability. A session-based cooperative game needs enough variety to keep players returning, especially when the core gameplay revolves around repeating missions or runs.

Ubisoft reportedly rebooted Project U in 2024 in an attempt to solve those issues.

Players who participated in earlier tests reportedly saw potential in the concept. However, some also felt that repeated sessions could become predictable over time. That feedback may help explain why Ubisoft wanted to overhaul the project.

Whatever happened behind the scenes, Project U ultimately never escaped development.

The Screenshot Could Still Disappear

The newly surfaced screenshot also raises questions about Ubisoft’s response to leaked Project U material.

Kran27_ openly questioned whether sharing the screenshot could cause problems because of the game’s NDA. That concern is not without precedent.

Ubisoft previously issued a DMCA request against leaked Project U footage after a cinematic appeared online. As a result, the company could potentially take similar action against additional leaked material.

For now, however, the screenshot offers a rare look at a Ubisoft project that players will likely never get to experience themselves.

Project U Is One of Several Canceled Ubisoft Games

Project U was not the only Ubisoft project to disappear during the company’s recent restructuring and development changes.

Reports have linked names such as Project Aether and Project Crest to Ubisoft’s canceled lineup. Two Assassin’s Creed projects were also reportedly affected.

Ubisoft has additionally confirmed major cancellations elsewhere in its portfolio, including the troubled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake.

Another September 2026 report claimed that Ubisoft once worked with Nintendo on a Zelda spin-off centered around Ganondorf. That project was also reportedly canceled before reaching the public.

Project U therefore represents another glimpse at what could have been. The leaked screenshot suggests Ubisoft had already established several combat, movement and progression systems before development ended.

Players may never know how much Project U changed after its reported reboot. Still, leaked material continues to reveal pieces of a game that Ubisoft spent years trying to bring together.
