Pokémon GO is joining the Pokémon Trading Card Game’s 30th anniversary celebrations with a limited-time Mega Gengar raid event.
From September 27 through October 20, select Best Buy, GameStop, and Target locations will feature increased Mega Gengar raids. Players visiting participating stores can also gain access to exclusive Timed Research and additional rewards.
However, unlike a normal Pokémon GO event, this celebration is heavily connected to physical retail locations.
Mega Gengar Raids Take Over Select Stores
The promotion officially runs from September 27 at 10:00 a.m. local time until October 20 at 10:00 p.m. local time.
During this period, select locations belonging to the following retailers will receive increased Mega Gengar raid activity:
- Best Buy
- GameStop
- Target
Mega Gengar remains one of the more recognizable Mega Evolutions in Pokémon GO, making it an obvious choice for a Halloween-season promotion.
The timing also works particularly well with October approaching, although players will need to be near one of the participating retail locations to fully benefit from the event.
Exclusive Timed Research Is Also Available
Mega Raids are not the only reason to visit.
Participating locations will provide access to exclusive Timed Research, offering additional rewards including Poké Balls and encounters with event-related Pokémon.
This makes the promotion somewhat different from Pokémon GO’s traditional global events. Instead of simply opening the game wherever you happen to be, some of the event’s content specifically encourages players to physically visit participating stores.
It is Pokémon GO, after all. Apparently walking around the neighborhood wasn’t quite enough — now your shopping trip can become part of the grind too.
Gengar Knit Cap Requires a Gift Card Code
There is also an exclusive cosmetic reward available during the promotion.
Players purchasing eligible Pokémon GO gift cards from participating retailers can receive a redemption code for the Gengar Knit Cap.
The cosmetic gives trainers another Gengar-themed customization option, but its connection to gift card purchases means it isn’t simply being handed out as part of the anniversary celebration.
For collectors who want every limited cosmetic, that distinction will probably matter.
Celebrating 30 Years of the Pokémon TCG
The event is connected to the upcoming Pokémon TCG 30th Celebration set, which celebrates three decades of the hugely successful card game.
The anniversary set brings back iconic cards while also placing a major emphasis on Pikachu.
Every booster includes a Pikachu card, with 30 different artist variants available to collect. Artists represented include well-known Pokémon illustrators such as Yuka Morii and Ken Sugimori.
That makes the set both a nostalgia-focused celebration and another potentially dangerous rabbit hole for collectors determined to complete everything.
Thirty Pikachu variants certainly sounds reasonable until someone decides they need all thirty.
Pokémon GO and the TCG Have Crossed Over Before
This isn’t the first time Pokémon GO and the Pokémon Trading Card Game have been brought together.
The two sides of the franchise previously collaborated on the Pokémon GO TCG expansion in 2022, which directly incorporated elements and artwork inspired by the mobile game.
Pokémon GO has also experimented with retailer-focused events before. Mega Lucario raids were promoted through participating retail locations in late 2025, establishing a similar approach to bringing players into physical stores through in-game activity.
The Mega Gengar promotion therefore feels less like a one-off experiment and more like a continuation of Pokémon’s growing interest in connecting its digital games, physical products, and retail partners.
A Busy Period for Pokémon GO
The promotion arrives during the ongoing Twilight Trails season, which continues to introduce new Pokémon, events, and Mega Evolutions.
October is already shaping up to be another busy month.
Zorua will headline October Community Day on October 10, while Niantic has also started looking further ahead with Pokémon GO Tour events announced for 2027, including celebrations in Kaohsiung and Los Angeles.
Before all of that, however, Mega Gengar gets its moment in the spotlight.
Players interested in the raids, Timed Research, or Gengar Knit Cap should keep in mind that participation depends on eligible retail locations. The promotion ends on October 20 at 10:00 p.m. local time.
For everyone else, Gengar will presumably continue doing what Gengar does best: standing in the shadows and waiting for another limited-time event to make everyone chase it again.
