GTA 6 Could Have Its Own Dead Eye Combat System

GTA 6 appears to be borrowing one of Red Dead Redemption 2’s most recognizable combat mechanics. Recent gameplay footage points toward Jason having access to a slow-motion shooting ability that looks remarkably similar to Dead Eye.

Rockstar Games has not officially explained how the mechanic works yet. However, several details shown during gameplay suggest that this is more than a cinematic effect. A dedicated meter, an eye-shaped icon, and repeated slow-motion combat sequences all point toward a proper gameplay system.

If that is indeed the case, GTA 6 could combine elements from Grand Theft Auto 5’s character abilities with the more advanced Dead Eye system found in Red Dead Redemption 2.

GTA 6 Appears to Have a Dead Eye-Like Ability

One of the biggest clues can be found directly in GTA 6’s interface.

Gameplay footage shows a purple meter underneath the player’s health bar. More importantly, the meter is accompanied by an eye icon.

That immediately stands out to anyone familiar with Red Dead Redemption.

The Red Dead Redemption series uses Dead Eye to temporarily slow down time during combat. Depending on the game and progression level, players can use it to line up precise shots, identify targets, and quickly eliminate several enemies.

GTA 6 appears to be taking inspiration from that idea.

Several combat sequences have shown the action slowing down while Jason uses firearms. Combined with the dedicated eye meter, it strongly suggests that players will be able to manually activate the ability during combat.

GTA 5 Already Experimented With Slow-Motion Gunplay

This would not actually be the first time Grand Theft Auto has allowed players to slow down time.

GTA 5 gave each of its three protagonists a unique special ability.

Michael could slow down time while using firearms, allowing players to place accurate shots during difficult firefights. Franklin had a similar ability while driving, while Trevor could enter a rage-like state that increased the damage he dealt while reducing incoming damage.

Michael’s ability was already somewhat similar to Dead Eye, although considerably simpler.

GTA 6 may now be expanding that concept into a much deeper system.

Instead of simply giving Jason a generic slow-motion ability, Rockstar appears to have incorporated visual elements associated with Dead Eye, including the eye icon and a dedicated resource meter.

Jason Could Be the Only Character With the Ability

Another interesting question is whether both protagonists will have access to the mechanic.

So far, Jason appears to be the character most closely associated with the slow-motion shooting system.

That could make sense from a character perspective as well. Jason’s military background could explain why he is particularly skilled with firearms and capable of remaining focused during intense combat situations.

Lucia, meanwhile, has been shown using a more physical fighting style, with footage placing greater emphasis on close-range and martial-arts-inspired combat.

Rockstar could therefore be giving Jason and Lucia different combat strengths.

Jason could specialize in firearms and precision shooting, while Lucia could potentially receive advantages during melee combat.

However, Rockstar has not confirmed that the slow-motion ability is exclusive to Jason. Lucia may still have access to the same system, or she could receive an entirely different special ability.

A More Modern Version of Dead Eye Could Work Extremely Well

Bringing a Dead Eye-inspired mechanic into GTA 6 would also fit Rockstar’s increasingly detailed approach to combat.

Red Dead Redemption 2 turned Dead Eye into much more than a simple slow-motion button. The mechanic evolved throughout the game, allowing Arthur Morgan to become increasingly effective at identifying and targeting enemies.

GTA 6 could take a similar approach.

Jason’s ability could potentially improve throughout the story, giving players longer activation times, faster meter regeneration, improved accuracy, or additional targeting options.

There could also be limitations designed specifically around modern firearms.

Automatic weapons, shotguns, sniper rifles, and pistols could all interact differently with the system. Rockstar could even restrict certain functions depending on the weapon being used.

None of those progression details have been confirmed, but Red Dead Redemption 2 gives Rockstar an established framework that could easily be adapted to GTA 6.

The Meter Raises Plenty of Questions

The biggest mystery right now is how the purple meter actually works.

Rockstar has not explained what causes it to recharge or how frequently players will be able to activate the ability.

GTA 5’s special abilities regenerated over time and could also be influenced by certain gameplay actions. GTA 6 could follow a similar structure.

Alternatively, Rockstar could introduce consumables, combat actions, upgrades, or character progression that affect the meter.

There is also the question of whether using the ability will simply slow time or provide additional functionality.

A basic version could work similarly to Michael’s GTA 5 ability. A more advanced version could allow players to highlight enemies, identify weak points, or rapidly move between targets in a way closer to Red Dead Redemption 2.

For now, the footage confirms enough to make the mechanic interesting, but not enough to determine exactly how deep it goes.

GTA 6 Continues to Borrow From Rockstar’s Best Systems

The apparent Dead Eye influence also fits a broader pattern surrounding GTA 6.

Rockstar appears to be taking systems developed across previous games and adapting them to a much larger modern open world.

Vehicle theft is becoming more involved, police encounters appear to have additional layers, and combat seems to be receiving considerably more attention than the relatively straightforward shooting mechanics found in GTA 5.

That does not mean GTA 6 is simply copying Red Dead Redemption 2.

Instead, Rockstar seems to be taking mechanics that worked well in previous games and rebuilding them around the faster pace and modern setting of Grand Theft Auto.

A Dead Eye-inspired ability could be one of the clearest examples of that philosophy.

Rockstar Still Has Plenty Left to Explain

Despite the amount of GTA 6 footage now available, many of its underlying systems remain unexplained.

The eye icon and slow-motion sequences provide strong evidence for a dedicated combat ability, but Rockstar has yet to reveal its official name, progression system, recharge mechanics, or whether Lucia can use it.

Those details will likely become clearer as GTA 6’s November launch approaches and Rockstar’s marketing campaign continues.

For now, however, it looks increasingly likely that GTA 6 will give players its own modern interpretation of Dead Eye.

And after seeing how effective the mechanic became in Red Dead Redemption 2, bringing a more advanced version of it into GTA 6 could make firefights considerably more tactical than they were in GTA 5.
