US Senate Launches Investigation Into Roblox Child Safety

Roblox is facing another major challenge over the safety of younger players. This time, scrutiny is coming directly from the United States Senate.

U.S. Senators Josh Hawley and Dick Durbin have launched a formal investigation into Roblox and its child-safety practices. The investigation will examine how the platform responds to sexual and physical abuse involving minors, alongside concerns surrounding financial exploitation.

The senators are also questioning whether Roblox has placed growth and revenue ahead of protecting the millions of children who use its platform.

Roblox Has Until August 31 to Respond

The investigation is being conducted through the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Cyberterrorism.

As part of the probe, Hawley and Durbin sent a letter to Roblox CEO David Baszucki requesting detailed information about the company’s safety systems and policies.

Roblox has until August 31 to provide the requested information.

The senators have also indicated that additional legal action could follow if the company fails to cooperate with the investigation.

That deadline puts Roblox under significant pressure, particularly as the company is already dealing with lawsuits and growing criticism surrounding child safety.

Senators Question Roblox’s Priorities

One of the most serious aspects of the investigation concerns Roblox’s business priorities.

The senators are examining whether financial growth has been prioritized over measures designed to protect minors from abuse and exploitation.

That question carries additional weight because of the enormous scale of Roblox.

The platform reports more than 100 million daily active users and hosts over 44 million user-generated experiences. Some individual Roblox games can attract millions of players almost immediately.

Titles such as Grow a Garden and Steal a Brainrot have demonstrated just how quickly Roblox experiences can become enormous online communities. TTK Testing, for example, reportedly attracted around four million players on its first day.

With that scale comes an increasingly difficult moderation challenge, especially when a significant portion of the audience consists of children.

Roblox Defends Its Safety Efforts

Roblox has pushed back against the suggestion that it does not take child safety seriously.

Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman said the platform is “built on the foundation of safety” and expressed confidence that Roblox can provide senators with the information they have requested.

However, the Senate investigation arrives at a difficult time for the company.

Roblox has faced repeated criticism over how children can interact with strangers, how inappropriate content reaches younger users, and whether its existing moderation systems are capable of operating effectively across such an enormous platform.

The Senate probe could now provide lawmakers with a much closer look at how those systems work behind the scenes.

Lawsuits Continue to Put Pressure on Roblox

The federal investigation does not exist in isolation.

Roblox has already faced lawsuits from multiple U.S. jurisdictions, including Louisiana, Texas, and Los Angeles County during 2025 and 2026.

A separate high-profile private lawsuit has also gained attention after legal YouTuber Law by Mike became involved.

These cases have contributed to growing questions surrounding what responsibility Roblox carries when minors encounter potentially dangerous users or content through the platform.

The Senate investigation significantly raises the stakes because lawmakers can request internal information and potentially pursue further action depending on what they discover.

Governments Are Increasingly Targeting Roblox

Pressure on Roblox is not limited to the United States.

Several countries have taken much stronger measures against the platform.

Qatar, Turkey, and Egypt have banned Roblox, while countries including Brazil and Indonesia have introduced restrictions intended to limit the content available to underage users.

Governments around the world are increasingly examining how online platforms verify ages, moderate communication between adults and children, handle inappropriate content, and respond when users report potentially dangerous behavior.

Gaming platforms are becoming a larger part of that conversation as the boundaries between traditional games and social platforms continue to disappear.

Roblox Faces Another Major Child-Safety Test

The Senate investigation represents another escalation in the growing scrutiny surrounding Roblox.

The company operates one of the world’s largest gaming platforms, with more than 100 million people reportedly using it every day. Protecting such an enormous community is unquestionably complicated, but lawmakers now want to determine whether Roblox has done enough.

Roblox has publicly maintained that safety remains fundamental to the platform. Hawley and Durbin are now asking the company to provide information that could demonstrate whether its internal practices support those claims.

For now, August 31 is the key date.

Roblox will have to respond to the Senate’s requests by then, and what happens afterward could determine whether the investigation develops into an even larger legal and regulatory battle.
