Discord has increased its file upload limit for free users, reversing some of the frustration caused by a controversial change made in 2024. The new update gives users considerably more room to share images, videos, and other files without requiring a Nitro subscription.
Discord has become one of the most widely used communication platforms among gaming communities. Players use the service for everything from voice chat and screen sharing to organizing communities and sharing gameplay clips. However, its restrictions on file uploads have remained a common complaint.
That situation is now improving.
Discord Increases Free Upload Limit
Discord has increased the maximum file upload size for free accounts, allowing users to send larger files without subscribing to Discord Nitro.
The change is particularly useful for gaming communities, where screenshots, short gameplay recordings, mod files, and other content can quickly exceed smaller upload limits.
Discord previously reduced its free upload limit in 2024. Before that change, free users could upload files of up to 25 MB. Discord then lowered the limit to just 10 MB, which sparked criticism from users who already considered 25 MB relatively restrictive.
The company explained at the time that storage management played a role in the decision. However, the reduction meant users frequently encountered the upload limit when trying to share higher-resolution images and videos.
Free Users Can Now Upload Larger Files
With the latest update, Discord is addressing those complaints by increasing the amount of data free accounts can upload in a single file.
The improvement should make everyday file sharing considerably easier, especially as modern screenshots and video clips continue to increase in size.
A single high-resolution gameplay screenshot can already consume several megabytes, while even a short video recording can quickly exceed older Discord limits. Users previously had to compress their files, upload them elsewhere, or purchase Nitro to get around the restriction.
Increasing the free limit reduces the need for those workarounds.
Discord Nitro Still Offers Much Larger Uploads
Discord Nitro remains the premium option for users who regularly need to share significantly larger files. The subscription includes increased upload limits alongside other benefits such as enhanced streaming options, custom profiles, additional emoji features, and other customization options.
Therefore, the latest change does not remove the incentive to subscribe to Nitro. Instead, it gives free users more flexibility for everyday uploads.
That distinction could prove important for Discord. The platform needs to maintain reasons for users to purchase Nitro while ensuring that the free experience does not become unnecessarily restrictive.
The 2024 Change Was Heavily Criticized
Discord’s decision to lower its free upload limit in 2024 attracted criticism because it moved in the opposite direction of what many users expected.
File sizes have generally grown as smartphones, gaming systems, and PCs produce higher-resolution content. Cutting the limit from 25 MB to 10 MB consequently made sharing content more difficult at a time when larger files were becoming increasingly common.
Gaming communities were particularly affected. Discord servers frequently serve as central hubs where players share screenshots, recordings, bug reports, mods, artwork, and other files.
The latest increase therefore represents a welcome reversal for users who have dealt with the smaller limit over the past two years.
Discord Continues to Expand Beyond PC
Discord itself has also changed considerably since its early years.
Although gaming remains a major part of the platform’s identity, Discord now hosts communities covering countless subjects. Its integration with consoles has further expanded its reach, including support for PlayStation and Xbox systems.
Features such as screen sharing, streaming, voice channels, community forums, applications, bots, and server customization have transformed Discord into much more than a simple gaming chat application.
File sharing remains one of its most basic features, however, making restrictions in this area particularly noticeable.
A Small Update That Makes a Big Difference
Increasing the free upload limit might not be one of Discord’s biggest feature releases, but it directly improves something users interact with every day.
More importantly, the update addresses a restriction that Discord itself introduced in 2024. Users who were frustrated when the company reduced the limit finally have some relief.
Nitro subscribers will continue to receive substantially higher limits, but free users should no longer run into the upload wall quite as frequently when sharing everyday screenshots, clips, and files.
For gaming communities that rely heavily on Discord, that alone makes the change a meaningful quality-of-life improvement.
