Xbox players have another batch of free games to look forward to this weekend. The latest Xbox Free Play Days promotion runs from Thursday, August 13 through Sunday, August 16, with Sunderfolk already confirmed as one of the participating games.
Developer Secret Door confirmed that its fantasy tactical RPG will be available throughout the weekend. However, players will need an eligible Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate subscription to participate.
More games are expected to join the promotion, as Xbox usually includes several titles in each Free Play Days lineup.
Sunderfolk Joins Xbox Free Play Days
Sunderfolk is a fantasy tactical RPG developed by Secret Door. The game combines turn-based tactical combat with a tabletop-inspired presentation and an unusual control system.
Rather than relying entirely on a traditional Xbox controller, players can use their mobile phones as controllers. This approach allows the game to recreate some of the social elements of sitting around a table and playing a tabletop RPG with friends.
Players take control of anthropomorphic heroes belonging to different classes. Their adventure revolves around protecting their hometown while completing encounters, developing their characters, and progressing through the story.
The unusual design has helped Sunderfolk stand apart from more traditional tactical RPGs.
Sunderfolk Has Received Strong Player Reviews
The Free Play Days promotion also gives Xbox players an opportunity to try a game that has already received a strong response from its community.
Sunderfolk currently holds a 93% “Very Positive” rating on Steam, based on nearly 2,000 user reviews.
Its tabletop-inspired gameplay has been one of its most distinctive features. Previous previews have described the experience as feeling more like a tabletop game than a traditional video game, while still taking advantage of features only possible through a digital format.
Secret Door has also continued supporting the game following its original release. New content and additional classes have expanded the experience since launch.
A Good Opportunity to Try Something Different
Free Play Days can be particularly useful for games such as Sunderfolk. Its mobile-controller system and tabletop approach are difficult to fully judge from screenshots or gameplay videos alone.
Being able to play the full game during the promotion gives Xbox players several days to decide whether its unusual approach works for them.
The promotion also makes it easier to organize a group of friends who may have been interested in Sunderfolk but were hesitant to purchase it without trying it first.
More Xbox Free Play Days Games Are Coming
Sunderfolk is only the first confirmed title for this weekend’s Free Play Days promotion.
Xbox normally features around three to five games, although the exact number can vary from week to week. These promotions can include everything from smaller indie releases to major AAA games.
The type of access can also differ. Some Free Play Days events provide unrestricted access to the complete game, while others offer more limited trials.
Xbox also frequently discounts participating games during or shortly after a Free Play Days event. That allows players who enjoy a game during the weekend to purchase it at a reduced price and continue playing afterward.
For now, Sunderfolk gives Xbox players at least one confirmed game to check out between August 13 and August 16.
With additional games still expected to be announced, this weekend’s Free Play Days lineup could become considerably larger.
