New leaked details surrounding Pokemon Winds and Waves suggest Generation 10 could represent much more than another step forward for the long-running franchise. If the latest information proves accurate, Game Freak may be preparing for one of the biggest creative shake-ups the mainline Pokemon series has seen in years.
One of the most significant claims involves longtime series director Shigeru Ohmori, who is allegedly no longer directing the upcoming Gen 10 games. That would potentially end a decade-long run in which Ohmori helped shape the direction of several major Pokemon releases.
While the information remains unconfirmed, a new director could give Pokemon Winds and Waves an opportunity to rethink several parts of the traditional Pokemon formula.
Shigeru Ohmori May Not Direct Pokemon Gen 10
Shigeru Ohmori has played an important role at Game Freak for many years. However, his influence became particularly noticeable after he stepped into the director position for the mainline series.
Ohmori directed Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire before taking charge of Pokemon Sun and Moon, Pokemon Sword and Shield, and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
As a result, his absence from Pokemon Winds and Waves would represent a substantial leadership change.
The alleged change does not necessarily mean Ohmori has left Game Freak or the Pokemon franchise. Instead, he could move into a different development or supervisory position while another developer takes responsibility for directing Gen 10.
Until Game Freak officially reveals the development team, however, fans should treat the information as a leak rather than confirmation.
Pokemon Winds and Waves Already Looks Different
Pokemon Winds and Waves was officially announced during the Pokemon Day presentation in February 2026, giving players their first look at Generation 10.
The announcement included in-game footage alongside the reveal of the three new starter Pokemon:
- Browt
- Pombon
- Gecqua
Despite showing the starters and portions of the game, the reveal deliberately kept many details hidden. Game Freak has yet to fully explain the region, story, major gameplay systems, or exactly how exploration will work.
That has left plenty of room for leaks and speculation.
Previous leaked information claims Pokemon Winds and Waves could feature an enormous island-based open world. Rather than exploring one continuous landmass, players may travel between numerous islands while progressing through the game.
If accurate, that structure could make exploration a much larger part of Gen 10.
More Than 300 New Pokemon Are Rumored
Another massive claim surrounding Pokemon Winds and Waves involves its Pokedex.
Leaks have suggested that more than 300 new Pokemon could appear across Generation 10.
That would be an extraordinary increase compared with previous generations.
Most Pokemon generations introduce somewhere around 70 to 150 new creatures, depending on how regional forms and other variations are counted. Introducing more than 300 genuinely new Pokemon would therefore make Winds and Waves one of the most ambitious releases in franchise history.
An island-based region could help explain that unusually large number.
Different islands could contain their own ecosystems, Pokemon populations, environments, and potentially regional variations. Game Freak could use this structure to make individual areas feel considerably more distinct from each other.
Still, the rumored number remains unconfirmed.
Gen 10 Has Plenty to Prove After Scarlet and Violet
There is also significant pressure surrounding Generation 10.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet introduced several ideas that pushed the franchise forward, particularly its open-world structure and freedom of exploration. However, the games also received substantial criticism for technical problems, performance issues, visual inconsistencies, and bugs.
Those problems became a major talking point surrounding the ninth generation.
Pokemon Winds and Waves therefore has an opportunity to take the ideas introduced by Scarlet and Violet while addressing the problems that held those games back.
A leadership change could play an important role in making that happen.
A different director may approach world design, progression, performance priorities, storytelling, and exploration differently. It does not automatically guarantee improvements, but it could give Game Freak an opportunity to reconsider systems that have remained largely unchanged.
Switch 2 Could Give Game Freak More Freedom
Hardware should also play an important role.
Pokemon Winds and Waves is being developed for Nintendo Switch 2, giving Game Freak access to considerably more capable hardware than the original Nintendo Switch.
That could be especially important if the leaked scale of Gen 10 proves accurate.
Large environments filled with Pokemon placed considerable pressure on Scarlet and Violet. More powerful hardware should give the developers additional room for larger environments, improved draw distances, denser ecosystems, better lighting, smoother animations, and more stable performance.
However, stronger hardware alone will not solve every problem.
Game Freak will still need to ensure the engine and underlying systems can properly take advantage of that additional power.
Pokemon Winds and Waves Could Be a Fresh Start
Generation 10 was always going to carry enormous expectations.
It represents a major milestone for Pokemon, while Winds and Waves arrives at a point where parts of the community have increasingly called for technical improvements and more substantial evolution of the traditional formula.
Now, the possibility of a new director makes the project even more interesting.
Combined with rumors of more than 300 new Pokemon, a huge island-based open world, new exploration systems, and the additional power available through Switch 2, Pokemon Winds and Waves could become one of the biggest changes the mainline franchise has attempted.
Of course, much of the information surrounding the game’s scale and development team currently comes from leaks. Game Freak and The Pokemon Company have not confirmed many of these details.
Still, if even part of the leaked information proves accurate, Pokemon Winds and Waves may represent more than the beginning of Generation 10. It could mark the beginning of a new era for the Pokemon series.
