The original Digimon Adventure era is stepping back into the spotlight. On August 18, AFK Journey will launch a new crossover featuring some of the most recognizable characters from Digimon’s history.
The collaboration brings Tai and Matt into AFK Journey alongside their partner Digimon, Agumon and Gabumon. Their iconic Mega Evolutions are also part of the event, with WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon appearing in promotional material for the crossover.
For longtime Digimon fans, it is another opportunity to revisit the generation that helped turn the franchise into a worldwide phenomenon.
Digimon Adventure Returns on August 18
AFK Journey’s Digimon Adventure collaboration will begin on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.
The crossover focuses heavily on the original Digimon Adventure series rather than one of its newer generations. Tai and Agumon are joined by Matt and Gabumon, immediately bringing two of the anime’s most recognizable partnerships into the game.
Their evolutionary lines will also play an important role.
Agumon can eventually reach WarGreymon, while Gabumon can become MetalGarurumon. The crossover trailer has already showcased the Mega Evolutions, giving fans a glimpse at how the classic Digimon will fit into AFK Journey’s combat.
The collaboration arrives as part of AFK Journey’s ongoing seasonal live-service content.
AFK Journey Meets One of Digimon’s Most Iconic Eras
Released in 2024, AFK Journey is a free-to-play idle RPG built around character collection, exploration, progression and strategic combat.
Since launch, the game has received multiple awards and has continued expanding through seasonal updates and collaborations.
However, bringing Digimon Adventure into the game gives this particular update considerably more nostalgic weight.
The original Digimon Adventure debuted in 1999 and became the franchise’s breakthrough anime. While later generations developed passionate communities of their own, the original Adventure cast remains among the most recognizable parts of Digimon.
Tai, Matt, Agumon and Gabumon are especially important to that legacy.
Digimon Adventure Refuses to Disappear
More than two decades later, the original Digimon Adventure cast continues to return.
The franchise has repeatedly revisited its earliest generation through sequels, reboots, movies, merchandise, games and collaborations. That makes the AFK Journey crossover less of an isolated event and more of another chapter in Digimon’s continuing reliance on its most recognizable characters.
There is an obvious reason for that.
For many players and anime viewers, Digimon Adventure was their introduction to the franchise. Characters such as Tai, Matt, Agumon and Gabumon carry decades of nostalgia behind them.
WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon are equally recognizable. Their inclusion gives the crossover something that newer Digimon characters may struggle to match: immediate familiarity.
Digimon Is Already Having a Busy Period
The AFK Journey collaboration also arrives while the broader Digimon franchise remains active across several different projects.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger released last year and performed strongly in both sales and reviews. Its success has helped maintain momentum for Digimon’s console and PC gaming presence, while an expansion is currently planned for 2027.
Meanwhile, Digimon UP has taken the franchise into another free-to-play idle RPG. Its reception has been considerably less positive, although the game remains available for players interested in trying it themselves.
Another 2026 project, Digimon Alysion, is attempting something different by bringing the Digimon card game into a digital format. Its long-term commercial performance remains uncertain, but it represents another effort to expand Digimon’s presence in gaming.
Digimon Anime Is Moving Forward Too
Gaming is only one side of the franchise’s current activity.
Digimon Beatbreak is currently airing, with an English dub available through Crunchyroll. In addition, another Digimon anime project is expected to arrive in 2027.
That creates an interesting situation for the franchise.
Digimon continues introducing new characters, worlds and concepts, yet the original Adventure generation remains extremely valuable. Instead of replacing its older characters, the franchise increasingly appears comfortable running both generations alongside each other.
The AFK Journey crossover is a perfect example.
Nostalgia Remains One of Digimon’s Strongest Weapons
There is little mystery surrounding why Digimon Adventure continues returning.
Nostalgia sells.
However, nostalgia also keeps older characters visible to audiences who may otherwise have moved away from the franchise years ago. A collaboration with an established live-service game can introduce those characters to players who never watched Digimon Adventure during its original run.
At the same time, longtime fans get another reason to revisit Tai, Matt, Agumon and Gabumon.
It creates a crossover that can appeal to two very different audiences.
A Small Crossover With a Much Bigger Legacy
The AFK Journey x Digimon Adventure collaboration is ultimately another seasonal crossover, but the characters involved give it considerably more significance for Digimon fans.
More than 25 years after Digimon Adventure first appeared, Tai and Matt remain major representatives of the franchise. WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon continue to rank among its most iconic Digimon.
On August 18, they will return once again.
Digimon may continue moving forward with new games, anime and characters, but its original Adventure generation clearly isn’t ready to disappear.
