Larian Studios managed to run into an unusual problem while livestreaming its own game. An official Baldur’s Gate 3 stream was taken down on YouTube and TikTok after the broadcast showed nudity during one of the RPG’s adult scenes.
The incident happened on August 5 during Larian’s ongoing Dark Urge playthrough. The stream eventually reached the House of Hope, where the player encountered Haarlep and triggered one of Baldur’s Gate 3’s more explicit scenes.
Despite attempts to cover the action, enough apparently remained visible for YouTube to intervene.
YouTube removes Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 stream
According to the violation message shown following the interruption, YouTube discontinued the livestream because of “Body Exposure and Sexualized Behaviors.”
Larian had already tried to keep the broadcast suitable for streaming. During the Haarlep encounter, the team used a large D20 graphic to obscure explicit parts of the scene.
However, some nudity reportedly remained visible. As a result, YouTube stopped the broadcast. TikTok also removed the stream, leaving Twitch as the platform where viewers could continue watching.
The situation quickly became amusing for the developers because they had effectively been moderated for showing content from a game they created themselves.
Baldur’s Gate 3 nudity causes trouble again
Anyone familiar with Baldur’s Gate 3 will probably understand how this happened.
The RPG contains extensive mature content, including nudity, romance and sexual encounters. Players can adjust some of these elements through the game’s settings, while streamer-friendly options are designed to make broadcasting the game easier.
Nevertheless, the House of Hope encounter proved difficult to keep completely hidden.
Reports indicate that the game’s censorship settings did not fully obscure everything during the Haarlep sequence. The developers therefore attempted to cover additional content manually with the D20 graphic.
That solution wasn’t enough for every platform.
Twitch allowed the stream to continue
Perhaps the most interesting part of the situation is the difference between the platforms.
While YouTube and TikTok stopped the broadcast, Twitch reportedly allowed Larian to continue streaming Baldur’s Gate 3. Consequently, viewers on Twitch could keep watching after the other versions disappeared.
The incident highlights how differently streaming platforms can enforce rules surrounding nudity and sexual content.
For developers and content creators, those differences can make streaming mature games surprisingly complicated. A scene permitted inside a commercially released game does not automatically mean that every streaming platform will allow it during a live broadcast.
In this case, even the game’s own developer wasn’t safe from moderation.
Larian responds with humor
Rather than treating the situation as a major controversy, Larian appeared to have some fun with it.
Publishing director Michael Douse joked that “Baldur’s Gate 3 is now cancelled” after the incident. Larian also acknowledged that YouTube and TikTok had disappeared from the available platforms while Twitch remained active.
The timing made the situation even more entertaining for the studio. Baldur’s Gate 3 celebrated its third anniversary just days earlier, having originally launched for PC on August 3, 2023.
Instead of marking the occasion without incident, Larian ended up getting its own Baldur’s Gate 3 broadcast removed because Baldur’s Gate 3 was apparently being a little too much like Baldur’s Gate 3.
Fortunately, the situation did not result in a permanent ban. Reports indicate that Larian’s channels were restored after the temporary interruption.
Mature games remain difficult to livestream
There is a wider issue behind the funny circumstances.
Modern games increasingly contain mature themes that can include graphic violence, nudity and sexual content. Yet livestreaming platforms maintain their own rules regarding what broadcasters can show.
That creates an unusual situation where content approved for release inside an adult-rated game can still cause problems when streamed online.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is certainly not shy about its mature content, and Larian has never tried to hide that aspect of the game. However, this incident shows that even developers need to consider the moderation policies of individual platforms when showcasing their games.
For now, Larian can at least claim an unusual achievement: getting its own livestream taken down because of nudity in its own game.
