Nova Swarm Update Overhauls Combat, Boss Fights, and All 30 Ships

Nova Swarm has released one of its biggest updates yet, bringing sweeping improvements to combat readability, boss encounters, ship identities, controls, performance, and the overall player experience. While the core gameplay remains unchanged, nearly every part of the presentation has received significant polish to make battles easier to read without sacrificing the game’s fast-paced action.

The update focuses on making combat information more accurate, ensuring controls remain responsive, improving build variety, and giving all 30 playable ships stronger individual identities.

A Completely Rebuilt Nova Command HUD

One of the biggest additions is the brand-new Nova Command HUD system. Combat notifications now follow a unified presentation, making important information easier to understand during hectic firefights.

Wave Start, Wave Cleared, Sector Clear, Boss Defeated, boss warnings, reinforcements, Side Directives, repairs, power-ups, discoveries, and Near Miss notifications now share a consistent visual style.

Major combat events receive clear screen priority, while smaller updates move into compact tactical areas. This prevents important alerts from overlapping or disappearing during busy encounters.

Several improvements include:

  • Wave Cleared now transitions smoothly into the next Wave Start.
  • Boss Defeated appears after the boss explosion instead of interrupting it.
  • Sector Clear now leads naturally into the next boss warning and dossier.
  • Mission Status temporarily steps aside during major events.
  • Queued notifications resume in the correct order instead of overlapping.
  • Reinforcement warnings now use a more subtle presentation.
  • Warning colors now clearly distinguish neutral information, caution, and boss threats.

Older oversized visual effects have also been toned down. Effects like Storm Survived, giant combo notifications, Bonus Drone Down, Chrono Anchor, and constellation visuals no longer cover large portions of the battlefield.

Meanwhile, damage effects have been redesigned to stay stronger around the edges of the screen while keeping the center clear enough to spot incoming attacks.

Boss Battles Are Easier to Read

Boss encounters have received several gameplay improvements designed to make attack warnings more accurate.

Aimed attacks now lock their targeting during the warning animation, ensuring the telegraph matches the actual attack. Split attacks also display two warning lanes that accurately represent both incoming projectiles.

Additional boss improvements include:

  • Boss attack names now appear during attack windups.
  • All attack names support every available language.
  • Fuel ships now provide proper warning time before becoming active.
  • Boss phase, refuel, and reinforcement notifications follow improved priority rules.
  • Boss Defeated automatically clears outdated warnings.
  • Boss dossiers now feature larger, easier-to-read information.
  • Boss health bars now use one consistent display instead of multiple competing elements.

These changes aim to make difficult encounters feel fairer by ensuring visual warnings always match incoming attacks.

Controls and Autofire Receive Important Fixes

The update also improves gameplay responsiveness across keyboard, controller, and touch controls.

Movement now resumes correctly after pausing or leaving Tactical Draft menus, while stale confirmation inputs can no longer accidentally trigger actions after returning to gameplay.

Autofire has also been improved.

Instead of briefly losing targets between waves, weapons now transition smoothly into new encounters. Old projectiles that no longer have valid targets also disappear during wave changes instead of drifting into the next battle.

Other gameplay fixes include:

  • Graze Break no longer delays target reacquisition.
  • Tactical Fusion unlock notifications now wait until other major events have finished.

More Flexible Builds and Better Power-Ups

Build variety has expanded thanks to improvements to timed power-ups.

Players can now combine several upgrades that previously conflicted, including:

  • Rapid Fire with Double Shot.
  • Pierce with Damage Up.
  • Magnet with Score x2.

Side Directive rewards now appear in safer locations and include a short grace period before collection.

Tactical Draft has also been improved by avoiding recently offered upgrade combinations whenever fresh options are available, while still respecting fixed progression routes and Fusion requirements.

Several existing mechanics have received balance improvements as well. Permanent movement upgrades now scale according to ship type, Focus Lens remains active during Ghost and Phase abilities, and Focus movement penalties temporarily disappear while Phase is active.

Magnet has received a more reliable collection radius, while Sky Verdict now clearly displays whether its emergency beam is available.

Ghost, Fusion, and Defensive Abilities Are Clearer

Several defensive systems now provide much stronger visual feedback.

Ghost includes a dedicated countdown timer and arc, while its visual effects no longer conflict with standard invulnerability animations.

Players can also more easily identify which bullets were removed by Dodge, Phase Wake, and Rift Reprisal, along with which returning projectiles were created.

Rare Fusion rewards now appear as one clean notification instead of stacking multiple upgrade messages on top of each other.

All 30 Ships Receive Unique Identities

Every playable ship now has its own animated Hangar presentation.

Five ships have received entirely new Ascendant artwork:

  • Aegis Comet
  • Railbreaker
  • Drone Sovereign
  • Phase Seraph
  • Eirik the Viking

Eirik the Viking received the largest overhaul, featuring detailed Viking-inspired artwork complete with shields, decorative ornaments, and visible runic engravings inside the Hangar.

During gameplay, however, Eirik still uses a normal-sized combat model to preserve visibility.

The update also fixes a bug that occasionally caused Eirik’s model to grow after ranking up until it occupied much of the battlefield. Additional safeguards now automatically correct oversized ship rendering if it ever occurs.

The Hangar itself has also become easier to navigate, with clearer recommendations, improved mastery medal displays, better layout scaling, and support for lower-resolution screens.

Audio, Performance, and Interface Improvements

Combat audio has received significant attention as well.

Enemy attacks, pickups, kills, and major power-up moments now feature more varied sound effects, making important events easier to identify by audio alone.

Players can also adjust a new Chatter Frequency option with Full, Reduced, and Minimal settings. Critical combat warnings always remain enabled regardless of the chosen option.

Performance improvements include smoother reinforcement spawning, reducing frame spikes without affecting encounter balance.

Additional interface improvements include:

  • Better layouts across standard, compact, ultrawide, mobile-style, and 4K displays.
  • Improved Settings, Hangar, Tactical Draft, and results screens.
  • Fixed Scout Run score tie handling.
  • Corrected localization placeholders.
  • Better Side Directive timing after interruptions.
  • Support for all new text across English, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese.

The result is an update that keeps Nova Swarm just as frantic as before while making every battle significantly easier to read and understand.
