Grand Theft Auto 6 is already expected to become one of the biggest entertainment launches in history, but a new projection suggests Rockstar Games may be preparing for an even larger milestone than many expected.
Analysts Predict Massive Day-One Sales
According to a mid-June 2026 report from financial firm Piper Sandler, Grand Theft Auto 6 could surpass 45 million copies sold during its first day on the market. If that prediction becomes reality, the game would shatter previous launch records and establish a new benchmark for the industry.
For comparison, Grand Theft Auto 5 sold a confirmed 11.21 million copies on its first day in 2013. A launch of more than 45 million copies would represent over four times that figure.
The projection is one of the most ambitious forecasts yet for Rockstar’s upcoming title, which is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026.
Take-Two Remains Confident
Piper Sandler maintained an “Overweight” rating on Take-Two Interactive, citing Grand Theft Auto 6 as a major growth driver for the publisher.
The report also dismissed concerns that GTA 6 could negatively impact Take-Two’s mobile business. Analysts argued that the publisher’s mobile audience and console audience are largely separate, meaning strong GTA 6 sales are unlikely to come at the expense of mobile revenue.
Previous Day-One Sales Leaders
Although launch-day sales figures are not always reported consistently, several games have previously set impressive records.
Grand Theft Auto 5 remains one of the strongest launches ever with 11.21 million copies sold on day one. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 reached approximately 6.5 million copies, while Call of Duty: Black Ops sold around 5.6 million. Modern Warfare 2 achieved roughly 4.7 million units, and Grand Theft Auto 4 launched with about 3.6 million copies sold.
Several modern blockbusters have exceeded 10 million copies within three days, including Black Myth: Wukong, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. However, exact day-one figures for those games were never publicly disclosed.
Meanwhile, Cyberpunk 2077 accumulated around eight million pre-orders before launch, though refunds later complicated the calculation of its final day-one sales.
Marketing Campaign Set to Begin
Take-Two has stated that the full marketing campaign for Grand Theft Auto 6 will begin during the summer of 2026. CEO Strauss Zelnick has also reaffirmed that the game remains on track for its November 19 release date.
Fans have been waiting for new information for over a year following the release of the second trailer, and expectations surrounding the title continue to grow.
Will GTA 6 Break Every Record?
Industry observers broadly agree that Grand Theft Auto 6 is positioned to become the biggest game launch of all time. Whether the title can actually reach 45 million sales in a single day remains to be seen, but there is little doubt that Rockstar’s next entry will be one of the most significant releases the gaming industry has ever witnessed.
