GTA 5 PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Upgrade Becomes Free for Existing Owners

Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that players who already own Grand Theft Auto 5 on PlayStation 4 or the digital version on Xbox One can now upgrade to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions at no additional cost starting June 18.

The move gives millions of players access to the latest version of the game without having to purchase it again, removing one of the biggest complaints surrounding the Expanded & Enhanced edition since its release in 2022.

A Game That Continues to Evolve

Originally launched in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Grand Theft Auto 5 has enjoyed one of the longest and most successful lifespans in gaming history. After arriving on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, Rockstar later brought the game to modern hardware with upgraded editions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Until now, those enhanced versions required a separate purchase, even for players who already owned earlier versions of the game. With the new offer, that requirement has been removed for eligible owners.

What Players Gain With the Upgrade

The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S editions deliver several improvements over their previous-generation counterparts, including:

Better Performance

Players can expect smoother gameplay and improved overall performance, taking advantage of the power offered by newer hardware.

Technical Enhancements

The Expanded & Enhanced version introduces visual upgrades and various quality-of-life improvements designed to make both Story Mode and GTA Online feel more polished.

Progress Migration Support

Existing players will not have to start from scratch. Rockstar allows users to migrate both their Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters to the newer versions, making the transition seamless.

Good Timing Ahead of the Next GTA Online Update

The free upgrade arrives just weeks before the release of the upcoming Kortz Center Heist update for GTA Online. Scheduled to launch in July, the update is expected to provide fresh content and give returning players another reason to revisit Los Santos.

With the next major GTA Online expansion approaching and Grand Theft Auto 6 still on the horizon, Rockstar’s decision to make the current-generation version free for existing owners could encourage many players to jump back into the game and experience everything the enhanced edition has to offer.

A Welcome Change for Long-Time Fans

For years, many players questioned why upgrading to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions required an additional purchase. The new policy removes that barrier and rewards long-time fans who have supported Grand Theft Auto 5 across multiple console generations.

As one of gaming’s most enduring titles continues to receive new content, the free upgrade gives existing owners another reason to return to Los Santos and prepare for the next chapter of GTA Online.
