Two of the most beloved Call of Duty games may be making an unexpected comeback. According to several recent leaks, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 are reportedly being prepared for release on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, potentially bringing the classic titles back to modern PlayStation hardware for the first time.
While Activision has yet to officially confirm the reports, the leaks have already generated excitement among longtime fans who consider both games among the strongest entries in the franchise.
Leaks Suggest Classic Black Ops Games Are Returning
Information shared by PlayStation Game Size and later supported by additional reports indicates that both Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 are planned for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
If the reports prove accurate, this would mark the first time in more than a decade that the original versions of these titles receive new releases. Both games originally launched during the PlayStation 3 era and remain highly regarded for their campaigns, multiplayer experiences, and Zombies modes.
At the moment, Activision has not announced a release date, and no official reveal has been made.
Reports Point to Direct Ports Rather Than Remasters
Fans hoping for enhanced visuals or extensive upgrades may need to lower their expectations. Current reports suggest that these releases are simple ports of the original PlayStation 3 versions rather than full remasters.
According to the available information, the games would feature native PlayStation 4 versions that are also playable on PlayStation 5 through backward compatibility. This approach would allow players to revisit the classics without requiring a complete remake or remaster project.
Whether improvements such as higher frame rates or additional features are planned remains unknown.
Two of the Franchise’s Most Successful Entries
The original Call of Duty: Black Ops remains one of the most successful titles in the series. Released in 2010, the game received widespread praise and became one of the best-selling games of all time, with estimated sales surpassing 30 million copies worldwide.
Its sequel, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, launched in 2012 and also proved enormously popular, selling more than 24 million copies. Many fans still view Black Ops 2 as one of the strongest multiplayer entries ever released, while its futuristic setting and branching campaign helped distinguish it from previous installments.
Even years later, both games continue to maintain dedicated communities.
An Unusual Move for Call of Duty
Re-releasing older titles in their original form would be somewhat unusual for the Call of Duty franchise. Recent years have focused heavily on reboots and live-service experiences, including multiple iterations of Warzone and the Modern Warfare reboot series.
Instead of revisiting classic games directly, Activision has typically opted to introduce new storylines or reinvent existing ones.
Bringing Black Ops and Black Ops 2 to modern PlayStation systems would offer players an opportunity to experience some of the franchise’s most iconic entries without relying on older hardware.
Busy Times Ahead for the Franchise
The rumored ports arrive during a particularly active period for Call of Duty. Modern Warfare 4 is expected to continue the series with a conflict centered around the Korean Peninsula, while Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 launched in late 2025 and continues to expand the franchise’s ongoing storyline.
If the leaks prove accurate, longtime fans may soon have the chance to revisit the games that helped define an entire generation of Call of Duty.
Until Activision makes an official announcement, however, these reports should be treated as rumors.
