Final Fantasy XIV Hit by Renewed DDoS Attacks in North America

Final Fantasy XIV players on North American data centers were hit by another wave of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on December 19, with disruptions beginning around 3:30 PM ET. The incident caused widespread reports of sudden disconnects, severe lag, and login issues, particularly during peak play hours.

The attack follows similar DDoS activity reported in November and comes just days after the launch of Patch 7.4, making the timing especially disruptive for players returning to experience new content.

Square Enix acknowledged the situation, stating that it was aware of the network issues and actively monitoring the impact on service stability.

Why Patch 7.4 Timing Matters

Patch 7.4, Into the Mist, launched on December 16 and marked a significant update for the game. Among its key additions:

  • The finale of the Arcadion raid series
  • A new main scenario chapter that advances the story toward the next expansion
  • The introduction of the Strategy Board, designed to support encounter planning
  • Major glamour system changes, removing many long-standing job, role, and level restrictions on armor

With many players logging in simultaneously to experience the new content, the North American data centers were already under heavy legitimate traffic when the DDoS attack occurred.

Service Impact and Ongoing Mitigation

DDoS attacks work by overwhelming servers with malicious traffic, making it difficult or impossible for normal players to maintain a stable connection. While there is no absolute protection against such attacks, mitigation methods such as traffic filtering and rerouting can reduce their impact.

Affected players reported being able to reconnect in some cases, though often after facing extended login queues. Square Enix previously adjusted backend systems following the November attacks, and those countermeasures are believed to still be in effect during this latest incident.

Deep Dungeon Quality-of-Life Change in Patch 7.4

One improvement introduced following earlier DDoS disruptions affects Deep Dungeons. As of Patch 7.4:

  • Players who disconnect inside a Deep Dungeon can resume their run if they reconnect within 10 minutes
  • Progress is still lost if any party member is defeated during the disconnect window

This change was widely welcomed by the community, particularly in light of ongoing network instability.

Other Patch 7.4 Issues and Community Curiosities

On December 19, Square Enix also deployed hotfixes addressing issues related to Cosmic Exploration and several glamour-related bugs. However, not all oddities were resolved.

A level-1 “MissingNo”-style deer sighted in Coerthas Western Highlands has persisted since the patch and quickly became a point of amusement within the community, even as more serious technical issues took priority.

Looking Ahead

While Square Enix continues to monitor and respond to the situation, the renewed DDoS attacks highlight the ongoing challenges online games face during major content releases. For now, players on North American servers may continue to experience intermittent instability until the attack traffic fully subsides or is further mitigated.
