Mojang has released Mounts of Mayhem, the newest game drop for Minecraft, bringing fresh mobs, improved gear, and a brand-new weapon to both Bedrock and Java editions. While many players explored early versions of these features through Snapshots and Betas/Previews, this update marks their official arrival in the base game.
2025 has been a packed year for Minecraft. Mojang fully transitioned to its new “game drop” update strategy, allowing smaller but more frequent content releases. Earlier drops included Spring to Life in March, Chase the Skies in June, and The Copper Age in September. With the year coming to a close, Mounts of Mayhem lands as the fourth major drop of 2025.
New Underwater Mounts: Nautilus and Zombie Nautilus
The headline additions of this update are two new rideable mobs—the Nautilus and Zombie Nautilus. These water-based mounts offer a unique way to travel underwater at 5.4 blocks per second, giving players significantly faster ocean exploration.
Riding either mount grants the Breath of the Nautilus effect, helping players maintain their air supply underwater. While Nautilus can be lured closer using pufferfish, Zombie Nautilus are normally guarded by Drowned riders that must be defeated before the mount can be tamed. A “very rare” variant—the Coral Zombie Nautilus—can appear as well, but only within one specific ocean biome type.
More Undead Mounts Enter the Overworld
The Overworld becomes even more dangerous with additional zombie-mounted threats:
Zombie Horses
- Spawn after dark
- Come with a hostile rider that must be defeated
- Become tameable once unmounted
Camel Husks
Desert biomes receive a notable shake-up with the addition of Camel Husks. These mobs can be tamed and ridden even during daylight, but players must first deal with their riders:
- A Husk
- The new Parched, a mob capable of firing arrows and surviving in sunlight
These new enemies create more dynamic encounters while traveling through the world.
New Armor: Netherite Horse Armor
For the first time, players can now craft Netherite horse armor, giving their mounts significantly better protection. With so many newly introduced rideable mobs, higher-tier armor is a welcome addition that may influence combat strategies going forward.
Mojang Introduces the Spear
The update also adds the Spear, a tiered weapon built for both ground and mounted combat. While effective in close quarters, its real strength emerges when used while riding—its damage increases based on the player’s movement speed.
The Spear pairs exceptionally well with Elytra, as players can achieve high speeds in midair. Mojang has also introduced a new enchantment exclusive to this weapon:
Lunge Enchantment
- Increases movement speed during jab attacks
- Enhances the Spear’s mobility-focused combat style
This new weapon provides a fresh approach to fighting hostile mobs and opens up new strategies for airborne and mounted gameplay.
Looking Ahead
With Mounts of Mayhem likely serving as the final major update of the year, attention now turns to 2026. Given Minecraft’s massive player base and Mojang’s faster update schedule, future game drops are expected to continue shaping the sandbox experience in exciting new ways.
Players can now dive into the full release of Mounts of Mayhem and explore everything—from advanced mounts to high-speed Spear combat—that this latest game drop has to offer.
