Final Fantasy 9 Celebrates 25th Anniversary with New Character Art – Is a Remake Imminent?

Square Enix continues to fuel speculation of a Final Fantasy 9 remake with a new wave of official character artwork released as part of the game’s ongoing 25th anniversary celebration. Just over a week after unveiling refreshed designs of fan-favorite protagonists like Zidane and Garnet, the company has now completed the main cast reveal with updated artwork for Freya, Eiko, Quina, and Amarant.

Originally released in 2000, Final Fantasy 9 served as a heartfelt send-off to the original PlayStation era, embracing the series’ classic medieval fantasy roots. The four-disc RPG stood out with its colorful environments, deep lore, and a diverse cast of characters, each with unique skills and personality-driven roles in battle.

The new artwork—spotted by Aitai Japan CEO Audrey Lamsam—was added to the official Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary website and features detailed illustrations of:

  • Freya Crescent, the Dragoon, mid-leap with her iconic spear,
  • Quina Quen, in a battle-ready stance, representing the quirky Blue Mage,
  • Eiko Carol, serenely playing her flute next to a moogle, and
  • Amarant Coral, brooding in the distance with his signature gauntlets.

All pieces were created by Toshiyuki Itahana, the original character designer for Final Fantasy 9, further heightening nostalgia for longtime fans.

This follows Square Enix’s recent wave of anniversary merchandise announcements in March, including a Vivi-themed mug, collectible vinyl albums, and Final Fantasy 9‘s inclusion in the upcoming Magic: The Gathering x Final Fantasy crossover expansion. But what really has fans buzzing is the timing.

With less than nine days until Summer Game Fest, where Square Enix is listed as a featured partner, the proximity of these releases has reignited speculation surrounding the long-rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake—first leaked via the Nvidia GeForce Now database back in 2021.

Whether this is all part of a calculated buildup or simply celebratory fan service remains to be seen. However, with the growing demand for modern remakes of classic titles—and Final Fantasy 9 consistently topping fan-favorite lists—many are hopeful that a surprise announcement could finally be on the horizon.

As the anniversary rolls on and Summer Game Fest approaches, fans around the globe are watching Square Enix closely. Will this be the moment Final Fantasy 9 reclaims the spotlight?

Stay tuned.
