The animated backdrop arrives just days before the highly anticipated action-adventure title officially launches on April 8, 2025, for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
A New Look Inspired by Hazel’s Journey
Developed by Compulsion Games, South of Midnight follows the story of Hazel as she navigates a haunting yet magical Southern Gothic world. The new background is based on the game’s official cover art, prominently featuring Hazel herself. At first glance, the artwork may appear still, but subtle animations—especially in the vegetation near the bottom—add a dynamic touch that brings the image to life.
This themed background is now freely available for all Xbox Series X|S owners, continuing Microsoft’s trend of offering game-inspired visual customizations. It joins a growing lineup of popular dynamic themes, including those based on Halo Infinite, Diablo 4, and Starfield.
Momentum Builds for Xbox in 2025
Xbox kicked off 2025 strong with the successful release of Avowed in February. With more high-profile launches on the horizon—such as Doom: The Dark Ages and Ninja Gaiden 4—Xbox players have plenty to look forward to in the coming months.
