Rockstar’s transition to the Enhanced edition of Grand Theft Auto V introduced a save transfer system, allowing players to migrate their Story Mode progress from the older version to the new one. However, the process is not automatic and must be manually completed. Here’s how to ensure your progress carries over smoothly.
Step 1: Upload Your Save File (Legacy Version)
- Launch the older version of GTA 5 on your PC.
- Enter Story Mode and open the Pause Menu.
- Navigate to Game > Upload Save Game.
- Select your most recent save file and upload it. Only one save file can be transferred at a time.
Important: If Rockstar prompts you to accept new policies, you’ll need to enter GTA Online, accept the terms, then return to Story Mode to complete the upload.
Step 2: Download the Save in GTA 5 Enhanced
- Launch the Enhanced edition of GTA 5.
- Open the Pause Menu and navigate to Game > Download Save Game.
- Select the uploaded save file tied to your Rockstar Social Club account and confirm the download.
Warning: This process will overwrite any existing Story Mode progress in the Enhanced edition, and save transfers are one-time only—you can’t re-upload another save later.
Alternative: Manual Transfer
If the built-in transfer option doesn’t work or you want multiple saves moved, you can do it manually:
- Locate your save files:
- Legacy GTA 5 Saves:
{Documents}/Rockstar Games/GTA V/Profiles/[profile folder]
- Enhanced GTA 5 Saves:
{Documents}/Rockstar Games/GTAV Enhanced/Profiles/[profile folder]
- Legacy GTA 5 Saves:
- Copy the desired save files (e.g.,
SGTA50008
andSGTA50008.bak
) from the Legacy folder to the Enhanced folder. - Restart the game and check your save data.
This method allows for more flexibility, but always backup your save files before making changes.
Final Thoughts
Rockstar’s save transfer system works, but it’s far from seamless. If you’ve already started playing the Enhanced edition and want to keep that progress, be aware that downloading an old save will erase everything in Story Mode. Plan accordingly before making the switch.
