The original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) is rumored to be making its way to Xbox Game Pass in early 2025, marking another major addition to Microsoft’s growing Call of Duty library. According to a report from XboxEra, the classic first-person shooter is expected to join the subscription service between March and April 2025. Insider Gaming has since corroborated these claims with independent sources.
A New Addition to Xbox Game Pass
Following Microsoft’s $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in October 2023, the company has steadily expanded its Game Pass lineup with Call of Duty titles. The first entry to be included was Modern Warfare 3 (2023), which arrived in July 2024. Three months later, Black Ops 6 became the first Call of Duty game to have a day-one release on Game Pass.
With the potential inclusion of Modern Warfare 2 (2009), Microsoft appears to be capitalizing on nostalgia while continuing to bolster Game Pass with classic hits. However, key details remain unclear, particularly concerning the completeness of this version.
Will Modern Warfare 2 Be Fully Featured?
One of the biggest concerns surrounding Modern Warfare 2’s return is whether it will include all original content. The 2009 title’s campaign was remastered by Beenox for Modern Warfare 2 (2022), but its multiplayer component was left out. Additionally, Activision shut down the Steam version’s servers in July 2023 due to security threats, and there has been no indication that they will be restored.
If Modern Warfare 2 does arrive on Game Pass, it remains to be seen whether it will include its iconic multiplayer mode, or if it will be limited to the single-player campaign. Given Activision’s past approach to legacy Call of Duty games, there is a chance that the Game Pass release could feature only partial content.
Strategic Timing and Potential Release Date
Activision traditionally unveils new Call of Duty games around April or May, and Modern Warfare 2‘s Game Pass debut could align with this marketing window. If Microsoft is indeed deciding between a March and April 2025 release, March seems like the more likely option. April’s Game Pass lineup is already packed with day-one releases, including South of Midnight, Clais Obscur: Expedition 33, and Commandos: Origins. Meanwhile, March has only one confirmed title so far—Rebellion’s survival game Atomfall—potentially making it a more suitable period for Modern Warfare 2’s arrival.
With no official confirmation from Microsoft or Activision yet, fans should take this information with cautious optimism. However, if the reports prove accurate, players could soon relive one of the most iconic Call of Duty experiences on Xbox Game Pass.
