Sony to Phase Out PS4 Games as a Key PlayStation Plus Benefit in 2026

PlayStation Plus subscribers who have yet to upgrade from the PlayStation 4 to the PlayStation 5 may find themselves disappointed, as Sony has announced that PS4 games will no longer be a “key benefit” of the subscription service starting in January 2026. This decision marks another shift in the evolution of PlayStation Plus, which has undergone numerous changes since its inception during the PS3 era.

A Changing PlayStation Plus

Originally, PlayStation Plus provided subscribers with exclusive game discounts and access to a selection of free monthly games. With the launch of the PS4, Sony controversially added online multiplayer as a requirement for PS Plus membership—a stark change from the free online play available on the PS3. The service remained relatively unchanged at the launch of the PS5 but was later revamped into a tiered system:

  • PS Plus Essential: Retains the traditional model, offering free monthly games and online multiplayer.
  • PS Plus Extra: Provides access to an extensive library of PS4 and PS5 games.
  • PS Plus Premium: Includes all the benefits of the lower tiers, along with a selection of classic retro games from previous PlayStation generations.

As PlayStation Plus has evolved, older Sony consoles have gradually lost support. The PS3, PSP, and PS Vita were previously phased out, and now it appears that the PS4 will follow the same path. Sony has confirmed that starting in January 2026, PS4 games will no longer be a primary offering in the monthly free games lineup or the Game Catalog available through PS Plus Extra. While some PS4 titles may still be included occasionally, subscribers should not expect them to be a regular fixture.

Why Is Sony Phasing Out PS4 Games?

With the PS5 approaching its five-year anniversary, Sony’s shift away from PS4 support is a natural progression. However, the PS4 remains one of the best-selling consoles of all time, with a massive install base and millions of users who have yet to transition to the PS5. For those players, this move may feel like an unwelcome downgrade to their PS Plus subscription.

On the bright side, Sony is giving players nearly a full year to prepare before the change takes effect. Those who wish to continue receiving the latest PS Plus benefits may want to consider upgrading to a PS5 before January 2026.

Upcoming PlayStation Plus Free Games

Alongside this announcement, Sony has revealed the free PlayStation Plus games for February 2025:

  • Payday 3
  • High on Life
  • Pac-Man World: Re-Pac

These titles will be available for download to all PS Plus subscribers, offering a mix of action, humor, and nostalgia.

Final Thoughts

The removal of PS4 games from PlayStation Plus is another sign of Sony’s continued focus on the PS5 as its flagship console. While this shift may be disappointing for those who still game primarily on PS4, it aligns with Sony’s long-term strategy of moving players onto newer hardware. With a year to prepare, gamers still using a PS4 have time to consider their next move.
