CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has officially sold over 30 million copies worldwide, a milestone reached as of November 26, 2024. Additionally, the game’s acclaimed DLC expansion, Phantom Liberty, has achieved an impressive 8 million units sold since its release a year ago.
This marks a significant turnaround for the sci-fi action RPG, which launched in 2020 to widespread criticism due to technical issues, particularly on last-gen consoles. Despite its rocky start, Cyberpunk 2077 has seen a resurgence, largely due to CDPR’s continued support with updates, patches, and the highly rated Phantom Liberty expansion.
Record-Breaking Growth and Fan Support
The latest figures include sales from standalone copies of Cyberpunk 2077, as well as the Ultimate Edition, which bundles the base game with the Phantom Liberty DLC. Reacting to the milestone, Lead Quest Designer Pawel Sasko thanked fans for their “unreal support” and expressed disbelief at the game’s enduring success.
To contextualize its growth, Cyberpunk 2077 sold 20 million copies by September 2022, meaning the game has added another 10 million sales in just over two years. Similarly, Phantom Liberty has seen steady growth, nearly doubling its sales in 14 months compared to its first two months.
CDPR’s Plans for the Future
During its Q3 2024 earnings call, CDPR also provided updates on its other projects. The company revealed that development on the next Witcher game, codenamed Project Polaris, is well underway. However, the anticipated sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, Project Orion, remains in its early stages, with only 64 developers currently assigned to the project as of October 2024.
For Cyberpunk fans, there’s more to look forward to in 2025. The game is set to launch on Mac, expanding its reach to a new platform and audience.
Turning Challenges Into Success
CDPR’s journey with Cyberpunk 2077 is a testament to the power of perseverance and fan loyalty. What began as a problematic launch has transformed into one of the most commercially successful RPGs in recent years. With strong sales for Phantom Liberty and a promising roadmap for the Cyberpunk and Witcher franchises, CDPR seems poised to maintain its standing as a leading developer in the gaming industry.
