One of the most beloved racing games of the 2000s has made an unexpected comeback. Need for Speed Underground 2 is now playable for free directly through a web browser, thanks to an ambitious fan project called Underground 2 Revived.
The unofficial port brings the original 2004 racing experience to modern devices without requiring players to install the game. Even better, it introduces working online multiplayer, allowing fans to explore Bayview together once again.
Need for Speed Underground 2 Returns After 22 Years
Originally released in November 2004, Need for Speed Underground 2 quickly became a fan favorite. The game introduced an open-world environment, extensive vehicle customization, and an underground street racing scene that helped define an entire generation of racing games.
Players could explore Bayview, discover hidden races, upgrade their vehicles, and compete across several racing disciplines. Its combination of progression, customization, and nighttime street racing made it one of the franchise’s most memorable entries.
Now, more than two decades later, developer th0mk has brought that experience back through Underground 2 Revived.
Unlike a traditional remake, this project preserves the original game’s engine and gameplay. Instead of rebuilding everything from scratch, the developer adapted the existing PC version to run through modern browser technology.
Play Underground 2 Without Installing Anything
Underground 2 Revived uses WebAssembly and WebGPU to run the original game directly inside compatible browsers.
Players can access the project through nfsu2.xyz and start playing without installing additional software or providing their own game files.
However, the browser still needs to download the necessary game data. Players should expect a substantial download, with the complete preloaded data requiring approximately 2GB of storage.
The project also introduces several improvements designed for modern hardware. These include widescreen support, higher resolutions, improved controller compatibility, and frame rates reaching 120 FPS.
Keyboard controls remain available, while supported controllers and steering wheels provide additional ways to experience the classic racing game.
Online Multiplayer Brings Bayview Back to Life
Perhaps the most exciting addition is the return of online multiplayer.
Electronic Arts discontinued the original game’s online services years ago. However, Underground 2 Revived introduces its own multiplayer infrastructure, allowing players to race and explore together.
Players can encounter other drivers while cruising through Bayview. They can also create online racing sessions and join friends using the project’s multiplayer features.
The browser version includes shared free roam, crew functionality, and online racing lobbies. As a result, the city feels more connected than it did in the original single-player experience.
This addition gives longtime fans another reason to revisit Underground 2, particularly those who remember competing online during the game’s early years.
The Browser Port Could Face Legal Problems
Despite the excitement surrounding the project, its future remains uncertain.
Underground 2 Revived is an unofficial fan project and has no affiliation with Electronic Arts. The publisher still owns the rights to Need for Speed Underground 2.
Although the project’s publicly available source code does not include the original game assets, its hosted browser version provides the necessary game data without requiring proof of ownership.
That distinction could create copyright concerns.
Other unofficial browser ports have faced similar problems. Rights holders have previously requested the removal of projects that made older commercial games accessible through modern browsers.
Electronic Arts has not publicly announced legal action against Underground 2 Revived. Nevertheless, there is no guarantee that the browser version will remain available indefinitely.
A Reminder of What Made Need for Speed Special
Underground 2 remains an important chapter in the history of Need for Speed.
Its extensive customization options, memorable soundtrack, and open-world racing helped establish expectations that many fans still associate with the franchise.
The popularity of Underground 2 Revived also demonstrates the continuing demand for older racing games that are difficult to purchase through modern digital storefronts.
Electronic Arts has never officially re-released Underground 2 through contemporary PC storefronts, leaving secondhand physical copies among the few legitimate ways to obtain the original release.
For now, Underground 2 Revived offers fans an opportunity to experience Bayview again, complete with modern technical improvements and renewed multiplayer functionality.
Whether the project survives potential copyright challenges remains to be seen. However, its arrival highlights how much enthusiasm still surrounds one of Need for Speed’s most recognizable games.
