Call of Duty: Warzone is preparing to say goodbye to two major platforms. Activision will permanently shut down the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Warzone on November 6, 2026. The shutdown coincides with the launch of Modern Warfare 4 Season 1.
Players using older consoles will lose access to the free-to-play battle royale. However, Warzone will remain available on newer platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
Why Is Warzone Shutting Down on PS4 and Xbox One?
The decision follows Activision’s move away from last-generation hardware with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
Unlike previous entries, Modern Warfare 4 does not support PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Instead, the developers have focused on newer hardware to support improved performance, updated technology, and future content.
Warzone shares content and technology with the main Call of Duty franchise. As a result, maintaining separate versions for older consoles has become increasingly difficult.
With Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 introducing additional content and gameplay changes, Activision is ending support for the older Warzone versions.
Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 Brings New Warzone Content
While older consoles are losing access, Warzone players on supported platforms can expect new content when Season 1 launches.
One of the major additions is Hajin, a map previously featured in Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ mode. Its arrival will expand Warzone’s playable environments.
The seasonal update will also introduce new weapons, maps, and additional content connected to Modern Warfare 4.
These additions are part of Activision’s ongoing strategy to keep Warzone connected to the latest premium Call of Duty release.
Players on supported platforms will continue receiving seasonal updates as Modern Warfare 4 expands throughout its lifecycle.
Warzone’s Last-Generation Era Comes to an End
Call of Duty: Warzone originally launched in March 2020 and quickly became one of the franchise’s biggest multiplayer experiences.
The game attracted millions of players across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. For many console players, Warzone became a regular part of their gaming routine during the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One generation.
However, hardware requirements have continued to increase as the franchise introduces larger environments, new gameplay systems, and more demanding technology.
The November 6 shutdown marks another step away from the console generation that helped establish Warzone’s popularity.
Unlike traditional Call of Duty multiplayer releases, Warzone relies on ongoing online services. Once support ends, affected players will no longer be able to access the game on their older consoles.
Other Call of Duty Games Will Remain Playable
The shutdown does not mean Activision is closing every Call of Duty server on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Older multiplayer titles will remain available where their online services are still supported. This includes several classic Call of Duty releases that continue to maintain active communities.
However, older Call of Duty games have also faced longstanding concerns about cheating and security vulnerabilities, particularly on certain platforms.
Warzone’s shutdown is specifically connected to its transition toward Modern Warfare 4 and newer hardware.
What Happens to Warzone Players After November 6?
Players who want to continue playing Warzone will need to move to a supported platform.
Those already using PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, or PC will not be affected by the last-generation shutdown.
For PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users, however, November 6 marks the end of Warzone access on their current hardware.
The decision highlights how live-service games can eventually leave older platforms behind, even when those platforms still have active players.
Although the move allows developers to focus on newer technology, it also creates another barrier for players who cannot afford or do not want to upgrade their consoles.
For a free-to-play game that originally welcomed millions of players across multiple generations, losing two major platforms is a significant change.
Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 launches on November 6, 2026, bringing Warzone into its next chapter while leaving PlayStation 4 and Xbox One behind.
