Fans of Pokémon and monster-collecting RPGs have another promising adventure to look forward to. Indie developer Nara Studio has released a new trailer for Wonderful Neoran Valley, an upcoming creature-collecting roguelite that combines colorful environments, strategic combat, and an unexpectedly dark storyline.
The latest trailer, titled Welcome to the Valley, introduces two important characters while offering another glimpse into the mysterious world players will explore. Unlike traditional Pokémon games, Wonderful Neoran Valley aims to deliver a more narrative-driven experience where creatures have personalities, emotions, and motivations of their own.
The game is currently scheduled for release in 2028 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Wonderful Neoran Valley Introduces Two Major Characters
The new Wonderful Neoran Valley trailer focuses on the first meeting between the Knight, the game’s protagonist, and a dragon named Iris.
Both characters feature recognizable voice actors. Troy Baker, known for his performances in The Last of Us and Death Stranding, voices the Knight. Meanwhile, Ben Starr, recognized for his work in Final Fantasy XVI and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, lends his voice to Iris.
Their encounter introduces players to a world that initially appears cheerful and welcoming. However, the Valley hides a much darker reality beneath its colorful surface.
Strange creatures known as Neura Clusters are spreading corruption throughout the environment. Players must investigate these mysterious abnormalities while gradually uncovering the truth behind the Valley.
A Pokémon-Inspired Adventure With a Different Approach
Although Wonderful Neoran Valley shares similarities with Pokémon, its creature-collecting mechanics take a different direction.
The game features 85 unique creatures known as Neoran. These unusual beings evolved from animal and plant life through a mysterious force called Neura.
Unlike traditional monster-collecting games, players cannot simply capture every creature they encounter. Instead, they must communicate with Neoran and understand their personalities before convincing them to join their team.
Each creature possesses individual emotions, motivations, and personal goals. Building relationships through conversations plays an important role in recruiting companions and unlocking their potential during combat.
This approach could make collecting creatures feel more personal, particularly for players who enjoy developing meaningful connections with their companions.
Strategic Combat Lets Players Predict Seven Turns Ahead
One of the most interesting features of Wonderful Neoran Valley is its unusual turn-based combat system.
The Knight possesses a clairvoyant ability that allows players to see the next seven turns before they happen. This mechanic provides an opportunity to anticipate enemy attacks, prepare defensive strategies, and combine abilities for maximum effectiveness.
Rather than relying entirely on unpredictable encounters, players can study upcoming actions and develop strategies around their available Neoran.
The combat system also encourages experimentation with different creature combinations. Certain abilities can work together across multiple turns, potentially creating powerful strategies against difficult opponents.
Wonderful Neoran Valley also incorporates roguelite mechanics. Each run offers different possibilities as players explore environments, encounter creatures, and uncover additional pieces of the story.
Colorful Environments Hide a Horror Experience
Wonderful Neoran Valley might look like a cheerful adventure at first glance, but its developers have deliberately included horror elements.
The game combines vibrant 3D environments with unsettling imagery inspired by older low-poly horror games and VHS recordings.
This contrast plays an important role in the game’s atmosphere. Friendly creatures and colorful landscapes create a welcoming impression, while mysterious corruption gradually reveals something far more disturbing.
The developers have drawn inspiration from monster-collecting RPGs such as Pokémon and Shin Megami Tensei, alongside roguelite experiences including Slay the Spire, Balatro, and Inscryption.
By combining these influences, Nara Studio hopes to create something that feels familiar without simply copying established franchises.
Wonderful Neoran Valley Already Achieved Massive Kickstarter Success
Interest in Wonderful Neoran Valley has been growing since its successful crowdfunding campaign earlier this year.
The project originally sought approximately €100,000 through Kickstarter. However, supporters quickly exceeded that target, eventually contributing more than €923,000.
That success allowed the developers to expand their original plans and introduce additional features.
The campaign helped secure a Nintendo Switch 2 version, additional creatures, expanded questlines, and extra gameplay modes.
The project also attracted attention through its association with Italian Pokémon content creator Cydonia, who serves as the game’s creative director.
Nara Studio is now showcasing Wonderful Neoran Valley at Lucca Comics & Games 2026, where visitors can learn more about the project and meet members of the development team.
Wonderful Neoran Valley Could Be One to Watch in 2028
The monster-collecting genre continues to attract independent developers looking to offer alternatives to Pokémon.
However, Wonderful Neoran Valley appears particularly interesting because it does more than introduce another collection of creatures.
Its dialogue-based recruitment system, seven-turn combat predictions, roguelite progression, and unsettling storyline could provide a distinctive experience for players seeking something different.
The involvement of established voice actors also suggests that Nara Studio is placing considerable emphasis on storytelling and character development.
Of course, the game remains in development, and its ambitious mechanics will need to come together successfully before launch.
Wonderful Neoran Valley is currently targeting a 2028 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. A specific launch date has not yet been announced.
For Pokémon fans interested in a darker, more strategic monster-collecting adventure, this is certainly a game worth keeping an eye on.
