Two beloved entries in Nintendo’s legendary franchise are making an official comeback in 2026. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will return as part of a special anniversary collection celebrating 40 years of Zelda history.
However, fans hoping for new Nintendo Switch 2 remasters might want to lower their expectations. Despite the exciting announcement, neither game is receiving a newly confirmed playable release.
Instead, both adventures will feature in The Legend of Zelda: Master Collection, a physical trading card collection developed by Panini.
Zelda Master Collection Brings Back Two Fan Favorites
The Legend of Zelda: Master Collection celebrates four decades of Nintendo’s iconic adventure franchise. Panini is bringing together characters, artwork, and memorable moments from numerous Zelda games in a collectible trading card series.
Among the featured titles are The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, two games that originally launched during the GameCube era and remain popular among longtime fans.
The Wind Waker introduced a distinctive cel-shaded art style and took players across the Great Sea. Although its visual direction initially divided audiences, the game eventually earned widespread appreciation for its exploration, atmosphere, and memorable characters.
Twilight Princess offered a completely different experience. Its darker presentation, traditional dungeon design, and transformation mechanics gave players a more serious adventure. Link’s ability to transform into a wolf, alongside his companion Midna, helped distinguish the game from earlier installments.
Both titles later received HD remasters on the Wii U. However, fans have continued requesting modern versions for Nintendo’s newer hardware.
The Zelda Master Collection Is Not a Game Bundle
Despite its name, The Legend of Zelda: Master Collection does not contain playable versions of the featured games.
Instead, Panini has developed a physical trading card collection featuring artwork from across the franchise. A dedicated collector’s album will also accompany the release, allowing fans to organize and display their cards.
The collection includes several generations of Zelda adventures, from the original 1986 release to more recent titles such as Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, and Echoes of Wisdom.
Classic favorites such as Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, A Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening, Skyward Sword, and The Minish Cap will also receive representation.
This approach allows Nintendo and Panini to celebrate the franchise’s history while giving older adventures renewed attention.
However, collectors should not confuse the announcement with a remaster collection or a new Nintendo Switch 2 release.
Fans Are Still Waiting for Wind Waker and Twilight Princess on Switch 2
For years, Zelda fans have requested modern ports of The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD.
Both remasters remain associated with Nintendo’s discontinued Wii U hardware, making them less accessible to players who missed that console generation.
The situation has become especially noticeable as Nintendo continues bringing older games to newer systems.
With The Legend of Zelda celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2026, many fans hoped Nintendo would finally revisit these two adventures.
The upcoming Ocarina of Time remake demonstrates Nintendo’s willingness to modernize classic Zelda experiences. That remake arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, complete with redesigned visuals, updated controls, and additional improvements.
Nevertheless, Nintendo has not announced native Switch or Switch 2 versions of The Wind Waker HD or Twilight Princess HD.
Their appearance in the Master Collection should therefore not be interpreted as evidence that new ports are currently in development.
Zelda’s 40th Anniversary Continues With More Celebrations
Nintendo has already revealed several projects celebrating The Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary.
Alongside the Ocarina of Time remake, the company has announced a special Zelda-themed Nintendo Switch 2 console, anniversary accessories, collectible merchandise, and worldwide concert performances.
The Panini Master Collection adds another product to those celebrations, giving fans an opportunity to revisit the franchise through physical collectibles.
For longtime enthusiasts, the collection could offer an appealing way to celebrate memorable characters and adventures from different generations.
However, the announcement also highlights how much demand remains for older Zelda games to become available on modern hardware.
While Nintendo continues expanding its anniversary celebrations, players hoping to return to the Great Sea or explore the Twilight Realm will have to wait for a separate announcement.
When Will The Legend of Zelda: Master Collection Release?
The Legend of Zelda: Master Collection is scheduled to arrive later in 2026.
Panini has already revealed promotional artwork and details about the accompanying collector’s album. However, an exact release date, final pricing, and complete regional availability have not yet been confirmed.
Additional information about the collection and its distribution is expected as the release approaches.
For now, the return of The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess is welcome news for Zelda collectors, even if it is not the comeback many players were hoping for.
The real question remains whether Nintendo will eventually bring both adventures to Nintendo Switch 2. Until then, their latest return will be through trading cards rather than playable remasters.
