Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has received its first major weapon-balancing update, and several popular weapons are already feeling the impact. Infinity Ward released the update on October 28, introducing numerous buffs and nerfs just five days after the game’s launch.
The latest patch targets weapon damage, effective range, recoil, and movement. While several powerful weapons have received nerfs, nine others have gained improvements. Submachine guns are among the biggest winners, with adjustments designed to make close-range combat more consistent.
Infinity Ward also addressed several gameplay problems, including an issue with the Quick Fix Perk that allowed players to regenerate health while taking damage.
Modern Warfare 4 Update Introduces Major Weapon Balance Changes
The October 28 update marks Infinity Ward’s first broad attempt to balance the multiplayer experience following launch. The developer wants to improve time-to-kill consistency while ensuring that different weapon categories remain competitive.
Assault rifles, submachine guns, and light machine guns have all received adjustments. However, the changes are not limited to individual weapon damage. Several attachments have also been modified to prevent certain combinations from becoming too powerful.
The Han 86 and Oden are among the most notable weapons affected by the update. Both assault rifles now deal less bonus damage to specific body parts, although the Han 86 receives an improvement to its maximum damage range.
Meanwhile, the M4 and Kastov 762 have received range improvements, potentially making them more attractive choices for players who prefer medium-range engagements.
Nine Weapons Receive Buffs in Modern Warfare 4
Infinity Ward has improved nine weapons in the latest update, with several changes focusing on damage consistency and weapon handling.
The Kastov 762 receives an 11% increase to its maximum damage range, while the M4 gains a smaller 3% improvement. These adjustments should help both assault rifles maintain their effectiveness at longer distances.
The Patriot XMR also benefits from improved attachment performance. Its EXP Haste 80L Light Barrel and FJX Fury IV Skeleton Grip now have reduced recoil-control penalties.
Submachine guns receive some of the most significant improvements. The ISO Nightshade, PPSh-41, VEL 46, Wz.55 Striga, and X-58 Nyx now deal more consistent damage when shots hit an opponent’s arms or hands.
The PPSh-41 also receives faster aiming, with its aim-down-sights time dropping from 300 milliseconds to 280 milliseconds. Additional movement improvements should make the weapon more responsive during aggressive encounters.
The Wz.55 Striga gains a 7% increase to its maximum damage range, while the X-58 Nyx benefits from improved headshot damage and additional attachment adjustments.
Finally, the Type 73 receives a 5% minimum damage increase when equipped with its Assault Apex Attachment.
Together, these changes could make several previously overlooked weapons more competitive in multiplayer.
Han 86, Oden, and Light Machine Guns Receive Nerfs
Not every weapon benefits from the October 28 update. Infinity Ward has also reduced the effectiveness of several powerful options.
The Han 86 receives a 9% reduction to its neck and upper torso damage multipliers. However, its maximum damage range increases by 7%, making the adjustment a combination of buffs and nerfs rather than a complete downgrade.
The Oden receives more substantial reductions. Its neck and upper torso damage multipliers decrease by approximately 8%, while its lower torso multiplier drops by 9%.
The Oden’s Sentinel Apex Attachment also loses some of its effective damage range and receives an additional muzzle-velocity penalty.
Light machine guns have not escaped the balancing changes either. The APOC-338 now deals less damage at medium and longer distances, with its minimum damage reduced by approximately 6%.
The FiNN LMG also receives a shorter effective damage range and reduced upper-arm damage multipliers.
Additional attachment changes affect the Hyeon Burst and Warlord shotgun, further expanding the update’s impact on existing loadouts.
Quick Fix Perk Finally Works as Intended
Beyond weapon balancing, Infinity Ward has corrected an important issue involving the Quick Fix Perk.
Previously, players using Quick Fix could continue regenerating health even while receiving damage. This unintended behavior made some opponents significantly harder to eliminate.
Following the update, taking damage properly interrupts health regeneration.
The change should improve combat consistency, especially during encounters where players previously appeared capable of surviving more damage than expected.
Infinity Ward has also addressed an exploit involving movement mechanics. Players could combine sprinting, jumping, and diving to achieve unintended movement speeds.
To reduce the effectiveness of this exploit, the developer lowered dive velocity after a sprint jump by 23%.
Modern Warfare 4 Update Also Fixes Challenges and Multiplayer Issues
The latest update includes several additional improvements aimed at making multiplayer more reliable.
Infinity Ward has corrected tracking problems involving melee kills, backstabs, and takedowns. The developer also adjusted the distance requirements used to track Point Blank and Longshot challenges.
These changes should make weapon progression less frustrating, particularly for players working toward camouflage unlocks.
Free-for-All has also received attention. Following player feedback, Infinity Ward restored the mode’s score limit to 30 and restricted party sizes to two players.
Other fixes address Riot Shield exploits, incorrect Operator appearances in Gun Game, and visibility issues involving UAVs.
The update also includes improvements for DMZ, focusing on exploits and problems involving loadouts and extraction.
Infinity Ward Continues Adjusting Modern Warfare 4 After Launch
Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23, and Infinity Ward has already released several updates addressing gameplay issues, stability, and multiplayer balancing.
The October 28 patch represents a more significant step because it directly changes how numerous weapons perform in combat.
However, it remains unclear which weapons will dominate the multiplayer meta once players have had more time to experiment with the adjustments.
The improvements to submachine guns could encourage more aggressive playstyles, while the reductions to certain assault rifles and light machine guns may force players to reconsider their preferred loadouts.
Infinity Ward has indicated that it will continue monitoring player feedback and making adjustments where necessary.
For now, Modern Warfare 4 players should expect a noticeably different multiplayer experience, especially when using weapons affected by the latest balance changes.
With Season 1 approaching, further adjustments remain possible as the developer continues refining the game’s competitive balance.
