EA Sports FC 27 Hit by Negative Steam Reviews Days After Launch

EA Sports FC 27 may be sitting near the top of Steam’s sales charts, but players are not exactly giving EA a victory lap.

Released on September 25, EA Sports FC 27 has already been hit by a wave of negative Steam reviews. The backlash has pushed the game’s overall user rating into the “Mixed” category, with players criticizing everything from gameplay changes to bugs and what many see as another lack of meaningful improvements.

For a franchise that returns every single year, that criticism is probably starting to sound rather familiar.

EA Sports FC 27 Players Are Not Happy

EA promoted EA Sports FC 27 as another major step forward for its football franchise. Gameplay changes were positioned as one of the biggest improvements, with adjustments to attacking, defending, corners, passing, and the overall feel of matches.

The game also introduced The Grounds, a new multiplayer-focused social hub that follows a similar idea to The City in NBA 2K and World of Chel in NHL.

However, those additions have apparently not been enough to convince a significant portion of the Steam community.

Many negative reviews argue that EA Sports FC 27 simply does not feel different enough from EA Sports FC 26. For players paying for another full annual release, updated squads and a handful of new systems are not necessarily enough.

Passing and Manual Defending Face Criticism

The gameplay itself is also receiving plenty of criticism.

Players have reported frustrations with passing, while the new manual defending system has proven divisive. Bugs and other technical problems are also appearing frequently among complaints posted shortly after launch.

That creates an awkward situation for EA.

Gameplay improvements were supposed to be one of EA Sports FC 27’s biggest selling points. Yet some of those exact changes are now among the biggest reasons players are leaving negative reviews.

Of course, the game has only just launched. EA still has plenty of opportunities to address bugs and rebalance mechanics through future updates.

Whether that will change opinions about the game’s overall level of innovation is another question entirely.

EA Sports FC 27 Is Still Selling Extremely Well

Perhaps the most interesting part of the situation is that the negative reception does not appear to be stopping people from buying the game.

EA Sports FC 27 remains among Steam’s best-selling titles, competing alongside other popular recent releases such as Wardogs and Dressmaker.

It once again highlights the unusual relationship players have with annual sports franchises. A game can receive significant criticism while simultaneously becoming one of the biggest commercial releases on the platform.

EA Sports FC has an enormous established audience, and for many football fans, skipping an entire season means missing updated squads, online competition, Ultimate Team content, and whatever new features arrive with that year’s game.

That gives annual sports franchises a level of momentum that many other games simply do not have.

The Same Annual Release Problem Returns

Complaints about EA Sports FC 27 lacking substantial improvements are hardly new territory for EA Sports.

The publisher’s annual sports franchises have faced similar criticism for years. Some players argue that each new release increasingly resembles an expensive seasonal update rather than a completely new game.

Updated rosters, refreshed presentation, gameplay tweaks, and several new modes can certainly add value. However, expectations become considerably higher when players are being asked to purchase another full release every year.

The yearly development cycle may also be part of the problem.

Creating major technological or gameplay changes within roughly twelve months is difficult, particularly when developers also need to maintain existing modes, online infrastructure, licensing agreements, Ultimate Team, Career Mode, and other features expected by the community.

At some point, there is only so much that can realistically change before the next September release arrives.

Strong Sales Do Not Make the Criticism Disappear

EA Sports FC 27’s launch currently paints two very different pictures.

Commercially, the game appears to be doing exactly what EA would want. It is selling extremely well and remains high on Steam’s charts only days after release.

Player reception, however, is much less convincing.

The “Mixed” Steam rating shows that a noticeable portion of PC players are dissatisfied with the latest entry, particularly when it comes to gameplay changes, bugs, and whether FC 27 actually offers enough improvements over its predecessor.

EA can patch technical problems and adjust gameplay over the coming weeks and months. The bigger challenge is convincing players that buying another EA Sports FC every September still provides enough new content to justify starting over again.

Because if the biggest feature eventually becomes “the squads are updated,” players are inevitably going to start asking why that required another full game.
