Former GTA 6 Developer Talks About a Possible Nintendo Switch 2 Release

Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently heading to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but one major platform remains a question mark: Nintendo Switch 2.

A former GTA 6 developer has now discussed the possibility of Rockstar Games eventually bringing the highly anticipated open-world game to Nintendo’s latest console. While nothing has been officially announced, the comments suggest a Switch 2 version should not necessarily be ruled out completely.

GTA 6 on Switch 2 Could Be Possible

The biggest question surrounding a Nintendo Switch 2 version is obviously hardware.

GTA 6 is expected to push current-generation consoles extremely hard, with Rockstar building a significantly more detailed version of Vice City and the surrounding areas. Dense traffic, NPCs, physics, lighting, interiors, and the game’s enormous open world could all put serious pressure on the Switch 2 hardware.

However, former GTA 6 developer Obbe Vermeij believes developers could potentially get the game running on Nintendo’s system.

Vermeij has previously spoken about Rockstar’s development process and the technical challenges involved in creating massive open-world games. His comments do not confirm that Rockstar is actively developing a Switch 2 version, but they do leave the door open to the possibility.

And if there is one thing Rockstar has proven over the years, it is that the studio knows how to squeeze impressive results out of console hardware.

Rockstar Has Already Supported Nintendo Switch 2

A GTA 6 port would also not represent Rockstar’s first step onto Nintendo’s newer hardware.

Rockstar has shown an increased willingness to bring its games to Nintendo platforms. That makes the idea of GTA 6 eventually appearing on Switch 2 considerably less ridiculous than it might have sounded during the original Switch generation.

The real question is how many compromises would be required.

A potential Switch 2 edition could need reduced crowd density, shorter draw distances, lower-resolution textures, simplified lighting, or aggressive dynamic resolution. A 30 FPS target would also seem much more realistic than attempting to match the performance of more powerful consoles.

Nintendo Switch 2’s support for modern upscaling technology could potentially help developers bridge some of that performance gap.

There Is Still No GTA 6 Switch 2 Announcement

For now, Nintendo players should keep their expectations under control.

Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have not announced GTA 6 for Nintendo Switch 2. The currently confirmed console versions remain PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

That means the former developer’s comments should be viewed as a discussion of technical possibility rather than evidence of an unannounced port.

A Switch 2 version could also depend heavily on how GTA 6 performs after launch and whether Take-Two believes there is enough demand to justify the additional development work.

PC Players Are Still Waiting Too

Nintendo fans are not alone.

GTA 6 has still not received a confirmed PC release date either. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has repeatedly acknowledged the importance of the PC market, making an eventual PC edition difficult to imagine Rockstar ignoring.

Rockstar has historically released some of its biggest games on PC after their console launches, including GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Nintendo Switch 2 is much harder to predict because Rockstar would have to overcome considerably larger hardware limitations.

Never Say Never

A Nintendo Switch 2 release of GTA 6 remains completely unconfirmed, but it may not be technically impossible.

If Rockstar can find the right balance between visual quality, performance, and the sheer complexity of GTA 6’s world, Nintendo’s console could theoretically receive its own version somewhere down the road.

Until Rockstar or Take-Two says otherwise, however, GTA 6 remains a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S release.

Switch 2 owners can keep hoping, but for now, Vice City is still staying out of Nintendo’s hands.
