Super Mario Gets a New Logo as Fans Wait for Nintendo’s Next Big Game

Nintendo has quietly updated the official Super Mario franchise logo, giving its biggest gaming mascot a refreshed look while fans continue waiting for news about the next mainline Mario game.

The change itself may seem small, but the timing has already attracted attention. Nintendo is well into the Switch 2 generation, yet a completely new mainline Super Mario adventure remains missing.

So, is Nintendo preparing something?

Nintendo Quietly Changes the Super Mario Logo

The updated Super Mario logo recently appeared on Nintendo’s official website. Fans quickly noticed the change and compared it with previous versions of the franchise branding.

The familiar colorful design remains, but the new version has a cleaner and glossier appearance. It replaces the logo used between 2011 and 2026, marking another visual refresh for one of Nintendo’s most recognizable brands.

Before that, Super Mario used another major version of its logo between 1996 and 2011.

Nintendo has not made a major announcement surrounding the change. Instead, the company appears to have simply rolled out the new branding.

That naturally leaves fans wondering why Nintendo decided to update it now.

Switch 2 Is Still Missing a New Mainline Mario

The bigger story is what Nintendo has not announced.

Switch 2 is approaching its third year, and Nintendo still hasn’t revealed a completely new mainline Super Mario game for the system.

That is unusual for Nintendo hardware.

Mario has traditionally played an important role during the early years of Nintendo consoles. The original Switch, for example, received Super Mario Odyssey during its first year.

Switch 2 has plenty of Mario representation, but the next major platforming adventure remains absent.

A recent Nintendo Direct didn’t change that either. Despite speculation surrounding a potential reveal, Nintendo didn’t announce the next mainline Super Mario title.

Could the Logo Change Be Preparing for Something Bigger?

Possibly, but the logo itself shouldn’t be treated as confirmation.

Companies regularly update franchise branding without immediately announcing a new product. Nintendo could simply be modernizing Super Mario’s visual identity across games, merchandise, movies and other projects.

However, changing the franchise logo while fans are waiting for the next major game certainly makes the timing interesting.

Rumors and leaks have previously suggested that a new 3D Super Mario game could arrive in late 2027.

Some reports have also suggested Nintendo could expand upon the more open design seen in Bowser’s Fury, potentially creating a Mario adventure with larger interconnected environments.

None of that has been officially confirmed by Nintendo.

Nintendo Doesn’t Need a Long Marketing Campaign

A missing announcement in September doesn’t necessarily mean Nintendo has nothing planned for the near future.

The company has repeatedly demonstrated that it doesn’t always need years of marketing before releasing a major game.

Nintendo can announce a project, reveal gameplay and launch it within a relatively short window. That makes predicting its release schedule considerably harder than simply looking at what has already been announced.

If a new Super Mario game really is targeting late 2027, Nintendo still has plenty of time to reveal it.

The new logo could therefore arrive well before the game responsible for introducing the next era of Mario.

Mario Spin-Offs Aren’t Going Anywhere

Even without a new mainline platformer, Mario remains heavily represented on Switch 2.

Mario Kart is already part of the console’s lineup, while Mario Tennis continues Nintendo’s long-running tradition of turning the Mushroom Kingdom into a sporting competition.

There are still some obvious gaps.

A new Mario Golf game has yet to appear, while fans have also been waiting for another proper Mario baseball title.

Nintendo has decades of Mario spin-offs to revisit, meaning the company has plenty of options while development continues on the next major platformer.

Super Mario Is Bigger Than Games Now

Nintendo also has another reason to keep the Super Mario branding consistent: movies.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has become another enormous theatrical success, passing the billion-dollar mark at the global box office.

With numbers like that, Mario is no longer simply one of Nintendo’s most important gaming franchises. The character is becoming an increasingly important part of Nintendo’s wider entertainment strategy.

Further Mario movies now appear inevitable.

Nintendo is also expanding another major franchise outside gaming with a The Legend of Zelda movie currently in development.

That means Nintendo increasingly needs its biggest franchises to work across games, movies, merchandise, theme parks and other entertainment projects.

A refreshed Super Mario logo makes sense in that environment.

A New Logo, but Still No New Mario

The Super Mario logo update is worth paying attention to, especially considering how long Switch 2 owners have been waiting for the next mainline game.

But it isn’t a secret announcement.

For now, Nintendo has only changed the branding. There is no official confirmation that a new 3D Mario reveal is imminent, and rumors surrounding a potential 2027 release remain exactly that: rumors.

Still, Nintendo clearly isn’t slowing down with Mario.

Between Switch 2 games, spin-offs, movies and a newly refreshed franchise identity, the company appears to be preparing Super Mario for its next chapter.

Now fans just need to find out what that chapter actually is.
