Grand Theft Auto 6 is almost here, but not everyone will gain access at exactly the same moment. Rockstar Games is reportedly using a regional midnight rollout for GTA 6, which creates an interesting advantage for players in certain parts of the world.
As usual, New Zealand sits right at the front of the queue.
More importantly, Xbox players outside New Zealand may be able to join them.
GTA 6 Unlocks at Midnight in Each Region
GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, with the game becoming playable at midnight local time.
Rather than using one worldwide unlock time, each region reaches November 19 independently. That means countries such as New Zealand will technically receive access hours before players across Europe and North America.
This is nothing new for gaming launches, but GTA 6 is hardly an ordinary release.
After more than a decade of waiting, even a few additional hours could be enough to convince players to look for ways around the regional restrictions.
And Xbox owners already have a familiar solution.
The New Zealand Trick Could Work Again
Xbox players have used the so-called “New Zealand trick” for years.
The method is remarkably simple. Players change the location of their Xbox console to New Zealand, restart the system and potentially gain access when the game becomes available in that region.
If GTA 6 follows the expected regional midnight rollout without additional restrictions, this could allow Xbox players elsewhere in the world to start playing significantly earlier.
Depending on where you live, the difference could be close to an entire day.
It effectively turns New Zealand into the unofficial starting line for GTA 6.
PS5 Players Are Out of Luck
Unfortunately, PlayStation 5 owners should not expect the same shortcut.
Changing the console region on PS5 does not provide the same access method available on Xbox. PlayStation accounts and purchases are much more tightly connected to their original regions.
As a result, PS5 players will generally have to wait until GTA 6 officially unlocks in their own region.
That creates an unusual situation where Xbox players could potentially be exploring Leonida while PlayStation players in the same country are still waiting for midnight.
GTA 6 Launches Without GTA Online
There is another major difference between GTA 6 and previous expectations surrounding the launch.
GTA 6 will initially arrive as a single-player experience.
Take-Two has indicated that GTA Online will continue receiving support after GTA 6 launches, while an online component for the new game is not expected alongside the November release.
Based on the currently stated plans, GTA 6’s online experience is not expected before 2027.
That gives Rockstar an opportunity to concentrate entirely on the enormous single-player launch before introducing millions of players to another online ecosystem.
A Regional Rollout Could Reduce Launch Pressure
Even without multiplayer, GTA 6 will create enormous pressure on digital storefronts, download servers and platform infrastructure.
Millions of players will likely be preloading or attempting to launch the game within a relatively short period.
A regional midnight release naturally spreads some of that activity across several hours instead of creating one enormous worldwide spike.
New Zealand and Australia enter first, followed by Asia, Europe and eventually North America.
It will not eliminate launch-day pressure, but it could make the rollout slightly easier to manage.
The Wait Has Been Enormous
Few games arrive with the level of anticipation surrounding GTA 6.
Grand Theft Auto 5 originally launched in 2013, meaning players have waited around 13 years for the next numbered entry in the franchise.
Rockstar’s last major new release was Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018.
Since then, the company has continued supporting GTA Online while releasing ports, remasters and other projects. GTA 6 therefore represents more than simply another GTA release. It is Rockstar’s first enormous new game in eight years.
Trailers, gameplay presentations and the extended look at GTA 6 have only pushed expectations higher.
Not Everything Has Been Received Positively
The road toward release has also produced plenty of controversy.
Some players have criticized reported relationship mechanics and the restrictions surrounding certain interactions, while others have reacted negatively to Rockstar’s physical release strategy.
The biggest concern for physical collectors is that boxed copies reportedly will not contain a traditional playable game disc. Instead, the box will include a digital download code.
For players concerned about game preservation and physical ownership, that is a major downside.
You might still have something sitting on your shelf, but without the actual game stored on the disc, it is difficult to call that true physical ownership.
November 19 Cannot Come Soon Enough
GTA 6 is shaping up to have one of the strangest launch days we have seen in years.
New Zealand players will naturally enter Leonida first, Xbox owners elsewhere may attempt the traditional region-switching trick, and PS5 players will have to wait for their own regional midnight unlock.
Meanwhile, Rockstar is keeping the initial experience focused entirely on single-player, with the next generation of GTA Online apparently coming later.
After 13 years of waiting, however, those final few hours could feel surprisingly long.
And you can probably expect plenty of Xbox consoles to suddenly become “New Zealand residents” on November 18.
