Final Fantasy 9 remains one of the most beloved entries in Square Enix’s long-running RPG franchise. More than two decades after its original release, the game still has a dedicated following thanks to its memorable characters, distinctive fantasy setting, emotional story, and more traditional approach to the Final Fantasy formula.
Square Enix has continued revisiting older Final Fantasy games through remasters, remakes, rereleases, collaborations, and merchandise. However, Final Fantasy 9 remains in a strange position.
Fans continue to receive reminders that Square Enix has not forgotten the game, yet the major remake or remaster announcement many players have been waiting for still has not arrived.
Final Fantasy 9 Still Has a Strong Following
Originally released in 2000, Final Fantasy 9 introduced players to Zidane Tribal and a party that included Vivi, Garnet, Steiner, Freya, Eiko, Quina, and Amarant.
The game deliberately moved away from the more industrial and futuristic settings seen in Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 8. Instead, Final Fantasy 9 returned to a more traditional fantasy world filled with kingdoms, airships, magic, knights, and creatures.
That identity remains one of its greatest strengths.
Characters such as Vivi and Garnet continue to be remembered by fans decades later, while Beatrix also became one of the game’s most recognizable supporting characters despite not being a permanent party member.
Final Fantasy 9 also arrived during the closing years of the original PlayStation era, giving the game a visual style that immediately separates it from modern Final Fantasy titles.
Square Enix Keeps Returning to Its Older Games
Square Enix has shown repeatedly that older Final Fantasy titles still have significant value.
Final Fantasy 7 received an enormous remake project, while several earlier games were refreshed through the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection. Other entries have received remasters, ports, updated releases, merchandise, anniversary celebrations, and appearances in crossover projects.
That naturally raises one major question.
When will Final Fantasy 9 receive the same level of attention?
The demand certainly appears to exist.
Final Fantasy 9 has remained available on modern platforms, allowing new players to experience the game without finding an original PlayStation copy. However, those releases are ultimately based on the original game rather than being a complete modern reconstruction.
For fans hoping to see Alexandria, Lindblum, Vivi, Zidane, and the rest of Gaia rebuilt for modern hardware, the wait continues.
Final Fantasy 9 Is Almost Perfect for a Remake
Final Fantasy 9 could arguably be one of the easiest Final Fantasy games for Square Enix to revisit from a creative perspective.
Its exaggerated character designs could translate naturally into a modern stylized visual direction without requiring the realistic approach used by Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Square Enix would also have an opportunity to improve several elements without completely changing the original game.
Combat speed could be increased, loading times could disappear, environments could become more detailed, and the game’s cities could be expanded while maintaining their original designs.
A remake would not necessarily need to become a gigantic multi-game project either.
Many fans would likely be satisfied with something much closer to the original experience, provided Square Enix preserves the characters, story, turn-based combat foundations, and distinctive art direction that made Final Fantasy 9 memorable.
Vivi Alone Could Make a Remake Worth Seeing
Few Final Fantasy characters represent Final Fantasy 9 better than Vivi Ornitier.
His story begins with the appearance of a small and inexperienced Black Mage, but eventually becomes one of the most emotional parts of the entire game.
Final Fantasy 9 explores subjects including mortality, identity, purpose, war, friendship, and what people leave behind after they are gone.
Vivi sits directly at the center of many of those themes.
Seeing his story recreated with modern animation, improved facial expressions, expanded environments, and full voice acting could introduce one of Final Fantasy’s most memorable characters to an entirely new generation.
Square Enix Has Plenty to Work With
Final Fantasy 9 also contains locations that could look spectacular with modern technology.
Alexandria could become a huge medieval city filled with NPCs and activity. Lindblum’s enormous industrial structures could finally be shown at their intended scale. The Black Mage Village could become even more atmospheric, while locations such as Burmecia and Cleyra could benefit enormously from modern lighting and environmental effects.
The game’s world already contains the foundations of something visually impressive.
It simply needs the opportunity to be rebuilt.
Fans Are Still Waiting
Final Fantasy 9 has never truly disappeared.
The game continues to receive attention from longtime fans, new players continue discovering it through modern releases, and Square Enix continues acknowledging older Final Fantasy titles through merchandise and other projects.
But merchandise and rereleases can only go so far.
For many Final Fantasy 9 fans, the announcement they really want remains the same: a genuine return to Gaia.
Whether that eventually arrives as a remaster, remake, or something completely different remains to be seen. Until Square Enix makes that announcement, Final Fantasy 9 will continue sitting near the top of many fans’ remake wishlists.
