Another game is about to lose a major part of its functionality. EA has confirmed that the online services for Grid Legends will shut down on September 11, 2026, leaving players on PC, PlayStation and Xbox without access to the game’s multiplayer features.
Grid Legends only launched in 2022. Roughly four years later, a significant part of the racing game is already heading for the graveyard.
For players who still want to experience Grid Legends multiplayer, there are only a few days left.
Grid Legends Servers Shut Down September 11
The shutdown affects the following versions of Grid Legends:
- PC
- PlayStation 4
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox One
- Xbox Series X/S
Once the servers close on September 11, online functionality on these platforms will no longer be available.
Thankfully, this isn’t a complete shutdown of the game. Grid Legends’ single-player content will remain playable, meaning owners won’t completely lose access to the title.
However, multiplayer represents a significant part of the Grid experience. Losing it permanently means players will no longer be able to experience the complete game they originally purchased.
Grid Legends Is Only Four Years Old
That’s perhaps the most frustrating part of the announcement.
Grid Legends launched in February 2022, meaning its online services survived for only around four and a half years.
For an older game with a tiny remaining community, a server shutdown might be easier to understand. However, four years isn’t particularly old for a modern video game.
Plenty of players build collections with the expectation that they’ll still be able to revisit those games years later. Server-dependent features make that increasingly difficult.
When the servers disappear, part of the game disappears with them.
There Is One Strange Exception
Interestingly, Grid Legends isn’t disappearing online everywhere.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version is expected to remain online for the foreseeable future. Grid Legends received a Switch 2 release much later than the original PC, PlayStation and Xbox versions, giving that edition a considerably younger lifespan.
Mobile and VR versions of Grid Legends have also been released and are expected to remain playable beyond the September 11 shutdown.
That creates a strange situation where the newer versions continue operating while owners of the original console and PC releases lose multiplayer access.
Another Blow to Game Preservation
This is exactly why game preservation continues to become such an important discussion.
Buying a game doesn’t necessarily mean buying the complete experience forever anymore.
Servers close. Online requirements disappear. Multiplayer modes become inaccessible. Sometimes entire games vanish.
Grid Legends isn’t being completely erased because its single-player content survives, but the version available after September 11 will objectively offer less functionality than it did at launch.
And unless EA provides another way to host multiplayer sessions in the future, that part of Grid Legends will simply be gone.
Grid Multiplayer Is Becoming Harder to Preserve
The shutdown also creates another problem for fans of the Grid franchise.
There is currently no new Grid game announced to replace Grid Legends.
That means players interested in modern Grid multiplayer don’t have a direct successor waiting for them. Instead, one of the franchise’s most recent entries is simply losing its online component.
For a racing series built partly around competition, that’s a substantial loss.
EA Has More Shutdowns Coming
Grid Legends isn’t the only EA title facing retirement.
EA regularly closes online services for older games as player populations decline and maintaining infrastructure becomes harder to justify.
Several NHL titles have already been part of EA’s recent shutdown schedule, while NBA Mobile 26 is currently scheduled to be retired on October 27, 2026.
Grid Legends is therefore another name being added to an increasingly familiar list.
Play Grid Legends Multiplayer While You Still Can
Anyone who owns Grid Legends on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S and still wants to experience its multiplayer should do so before September 11.
After that, the single-player portion will remain available, but multiplayer will be history.
Grid Legends isn’t completely dying.
But another piece of another game is about to disappear permanently — only four years after it launched.
And that’s becoming far too normal.
