A new Xbox Store leak may have revealed how GTA 6 Online will be distributed. According to newly discovered store listings, Rockstar Games appears to be separating different parts of Grand Theft Auto 6 into individual install packages instead of bundling everything into one massive download.
While Rockstar has not officially confirmed the existence of GTA 6 Online, the leaked store structure has sparked fresh speculation that the online mode could eventually become a standalone download.
Xbox Store Lists Multiple GTA 6 Installation Files
The leak, first highlighted by Rockstar Intel, shows several install categories connected to Grand Theft Auto 6. Instead of one complete installation, the Xbox Store lists separate packages, including:
- Story
- Ultimate Edition Upgrade
- Vintage Pack
- Extra
This modular setup suggests Rockstar is allowing players to install only the content they actually want. The campaign appears to exist as its own installation, while special edition bonuses and additional content are treated as separate downloads.
That alone doesn’t confirm GTA 6 Online, but it does leave plenty of room for Rockstar to introduce it as another independent package.
GTA 6 Online Could Become a Standalone Install
If Rockstar follows this modular approach, GTA 6 Online could eventually receive its own download instead of requiring the full single-player game to remain installed.
Other major publishers have already adopted similar systems. Recent Call of Duty releases allow players to install the campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies separately, reducing storage requirements and giving players more control over what stays on their console.
A similar strategy would make sense for Grand Theft Auto 6, especially considering how large modern AAA games have become.
Separating Story Mode and GTA 6 Online would also make future updates much easier to manage, particularly if the online component continues to grow over several years.
Could GTA 6 Online Become Free-to-Play?
One of the biggest questions raised by the leak is whether Rockstar intends to offer GTA 6 Online as a standalone experience.
Although there is no official confirmation, a separate installation would technically make that possible. Rockstar could continue selling the full story campaign as a premium title while allowing players to download GTA 6 Online independently.
Such a move would fit the company’s increasing focus on recurring revenue through in-game purchases. GTA Online has generated billions of dollars through Shark Cards and other microtransactions since its original launch, making it one of the most profitable online games ever released.
A standalone version would lower the barrier for new players while potentially expanding Rockstar’s online audience even further.
Rockstar Has Remained Silent
Despite the growing speculation, Rockstar has barely discussed multiplayer for Grand Theft Auto 6.
The studio’s marketing has remained focused almost entirely on the single-player experience, leaving many fans wondering when GTA 6 Online will finally be revealed.
Many industry observers believe Rockstar will launch the campaign first when Grand Theft Auto 6 releases in November before introducing the online component at a later date. This staggered rollout would allow the developer to focus on launch stability while preparing the online infrastructure separately.
If that happens, GTA 6 Online may not officially arrive until sometime in 2027.
Leak Fits Rockstar’s Long-Term Strategy
Although the Xbox Store listing stops short of confirming GTA 6 Online, it does suggest Rockstar is building Grand Theft Auto 6 around a much more flexible installation system.
Whether the mysterious “Extra” package eventually becomes GTA 6 Online or simply contains additional downloadable content remains unknown. However, separating game components would give Rockstar more freedom to update, expand, and potentially distribute its online experience independently in the future.
For now, fans will have to wait for Rockstar to officially reveal its multiplayer plans, but this latest Xbox Store leak has certainly added fuel to the speculation.
