Nintendo to End Original Switch Sales in Europe in February 2027

Nintendo has confirmed that it will stop selling the original Nintendo Switch family across Europe beginning in February 2027. The decision affects the original Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED, bringing an end to nearly ten years of retail availability for the platform across the region.

Importantly, this is not the end of the Nintendo Switch ecosystem. Existing owners will still be able to play their games, access digital purchases, and use their consoles as normal. The change only applies to the sale of new hardware in Europe.

EU Battery Regulations Drive the Decision

The reason behind the move is a new European Union regulation that comes into effect on February 18, 2027. Under the new rules, many portable electronic devices sold within the EU must feature user-replaceable batteries.

Rather than redesigning the original Switch hardware to comply with the new legislation, Nintendo has opted to discontinue sales of the first-generation console family in Europe. Future hardware, including newer Switch models, is expected to meet the updated requirements.

Existing Owners Have Nothing to Worry About

Players who already own an original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED do not need to replace their systems. Nintendo has not announced any changes to online services, digital purchases, or game compatibility as a result of the decision.

Games released for the original Switch will continue to function, and users will still be able to access their existing libraries.

Europe Only—For Now

At the time of writing, Nintendo has only confirmed that the original Switch family will be removed from sale in Europe. No announcement has been made regarding North America, Japan, or other regions.

While this marks the end of retail sales for one of Nintendo’s most successful consoles in Europe, it does not signal the end of support for millions of existing Switch owners. Instead, it reflects the company’s transition toward newer hardware that complies with upcoming European regulations.

A Historic Chapter Comes to a Close

Since launching in 2017, the Nintendo Switch has become one of the best-selling game consoles of all time, redefining hybrid gaming and delivering countless first-party and third-party releases over the past decade.

Although European store shelves will soon say goodbye to the original hardware, its legacy will continue through its enormous game library and the millions of players who still use the console every day.
