Rumors surrounding Xbox’s next-generation hardware are adding more fuel to the growing debate over the future of physical games. According to a well-known Microsoft insider, Xbox’s upcoming Project Helix console may launch without a disc drive, although no final decision has reportedly been made.
The speculation comes during a week already dominated by PlayStation’s announcement that it will stop producing and selling new physical game discs starting in January 2028. Combined with recent reports that Grand Theft Auto 6 will only be sold physically with a download code rather than a game disc, the industry appears to be accelerating toward an all-digital future.
Project Helix May Not Include a Disc Drive
During the Xbox Two Podcast, Microsoft insider Jez Corden discussed what he has heard about Project Helix, Microsoft’s rumored next-generation Xbox console.
Corden previously claimed that the system was never intended to feature a disc drive. However, later reporting from journalist Tom Warren suggested Microsoft had not yet made a final decision on the console’s hardware configuration.
After checking with his sources again, Corden said there is currently no confirmed internal decision regarding physical media support. Despite that, he believes Xbox’s silence following PlayStation’s recent announcement could be telling.
According to Corden, Microsoft may be avoiding public comments if it is also evaluating a future without physical game discs.
Digital-Only Gaming Is Gaining Momentum
The discussion follows several major developments that point toward a broader industry shift.
Sony has already confirmed it will discontinue new PlayStation game discs beginning in January 2028, while reports indicate that Grand Theft Auto 6 will not ship with a playable disc, instead including only a digital download code inside physical packaging.
That move has reportedly caused some retailers to reconsider stocking the game, as selling a boxed product without a physical game disc conflicts with their existing policies.
Together, these developments have reignited concerns about digital ownership, long-term game preservation, and consumer rights as publishers continue moving away from physical media.
Xbox Has Not Commented
Microsoft has not officially announced any plans regarding Project Helix or the future of physical games on Xbox.
For now, reports suggesting the console could launch without a disc drive remain speculation based on insider information rather than confirmed company policy.
If Xbox ultimately follows PlayStation’s lead, the next console generation could mark the first where all three major platform holders primarily focus on digital game distribution, representing one of the biggest changes to console gaming in decades.
