Rockstar Employees Could Go on Strike Ahead of GTA 6 as Union Push Intensifies

Rockstar Games could face major disruption just months before the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6. Employees across the company’s UK studios have officially requested union recognition, and union representatives say strike action remains a real possibility if Rockstar refuses to negotiate.

While there is no strike been announced, the growing dispute has become one of the biggest workplace stories surrounding GTA 6 this year.

Rockstar Employees Push for Official Union Recognition

The newly formed Rockstar Game Workers Union, backed by the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB), has asked Rockstar Games to voluntarily recognize the union. If Rockstar refuses, the union plans to take the matter to the UK’s Central Arbitration Committee, which can force formal recognition under certain conditions.

According to the union, official recognition would allow employees to negotiate collectively on issues such as:

  • Better pay transparency.
  • Fairer working conditions.
  • Stronger flexible working policies.
  • Protection against excessive crunch.
  • Greater job security.

The union says these changes would give developers a stronger voice in decisions that directly affect their careers.

Rockstar Employees Say a Strike Is Still Possible

Although the union hopes Rockstar agrees to negotiations, organizers have made it clear they are prepared to escalate the situation if necessary.

That includes industrial action, with strike action remaining an option should the company reject voluntary recognition. At the moment, no dates have been announced, but union representatives say every available legal route remains under consideration.

For GTA 6 fans, that creates uncertainty during one of the most important stages of the game’s development and launch preparations.

The Dispute Started After 31 Employees Were Fired

The current conflict follows Rockstar’s dismissal of 31 employees in October 2025.

The IWGB alleges those workers were targeted because they were involved in union organizing. Rockstar strongly disputes that claim and says the dismissals resulted from serious confidentiality breaches involving internal company information.

Both sides remain locked in a legal battle, with an employment tribunal scheduled to begin later this year. The tribunal will examine allegations of union victimization and blacklisting after a judge ruled that the claims can proceed to a full hearing.

Could This Affect GTA 6?

At the moment, there is no indication that Grand Theft Auto 6 has been delayed because of the dispute.

However, a strike during the final months before launch could affect development, post-launch support, patches, or future updates depending on its timing and scale. Since GTA 6 is expected to become one of the biggest game launches in history, any disruption would immediately attract worldwide attention.

For now, both Rockstar and the union appear willing to continue discussions. Whether those talks succeed may determine if developers remain at work—or decide to walk out during one of the most important launches the gaming industry has ever seen.
