The launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 may not only become the biggest game release of the year, but it could also make buying a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S significantly harder.
According to new reports, major retailers are warning that console demand could exceed available stock when Rockstar Games releases GTA 6 on November 19. While Sony and Microsoft have already experienced hardware price increases throughout 2026, supply constraints may create another problem for gamers hoping to upgrade before launch.
Retailers Expect Demand to Outpace Supply
Industry sources claim retailers have been informed that ongoing hardware component shortages could limit the number of consoles available during the busy holiday shopping season. With Grand Theft Auto 6 expected to convince millions of players to finally upgrade from PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, stores may simply not receive enough inventory to satisfy demand.
One retailer reportedly expects demand to far exceed available stock, especially around Black Friday and the Christmas shopping period. That timing places GTA 6 directly in the middle of the year’s busiest retail season, creating the perfect conditions for shortages if production cannot keep up.
AI Hardware Demand Continues to Affect Gaming
The reported shortages are linked to the ongoing global demand for memory chips and storage components. AI infrastructure continues to consume enormous amounts of DRAM and NAND flash, driving up prices and making it more difficult for console manufacturers to secure enough components.
Microsoft has already announced another round of Xbox price increases, citing rising hardware costs, while PlayStation prices have also increased in several regions throughout the year.
Sony Appears Better Positioned Than Xbox
Although Sony previously stated it has secured sufficient PlayStation 5 production for 2026, analysts believe demand generated by GTA 6 could still put pressure on available stock.
Xbox may face an even tougher situation. Recent comments from Microsoft indicate the company is already dealing with supply limitations in certain markets, making Xbox Series X and Series S consoles potentially more difficult to find if GTA 6 drives a large wave of new console purchases.
Should You Buy Early?
Nothing has been officially confirmed by Sony or Microsoft regarding widespread shortages, and current warnings are based on retailer expectations rather than formal announcements.
However, with GTA 6 launching just weeks before Black Friday and Christmas, alongside higher console prices and continued component shortages, waiting until the last minute could prove risky. Players planning to buy a new console specifically for Rockstar’s next blockbuster may want to secure one well before November.
As always, supply can change quickly, but if retailer concerns prove accurate, GTA 6 could become one of the biggest drivers of console demand seen in years.
