The growing popularity of the Pokémon Trading Card Game has brought record-breaking demand and renewed excitement for collectors, but it has also attracted criminals looking to profit from the booming secondary market. A California card shop recently became the latest victim after thieves made off with thousands of dollars worth of products in less than a minute.
Brentwood Card Shop Targeted in Fast Smash-and-Grab Theft
The Card Lab, located in Brentwood, California, was robbed by three masked individuals who entered the store and quickly grabbed Pokémon products from behind the counter before escaping in a Nissan Altima. According to security footage, the entire incident lasted just 39 seconds.
Authorities have not yet identified or arrested any suspects involved in the robbery.
The thieves reportedly focused on sealed Pokémon products and loose inventory stored behind the counter. Among the products visible during the incident were a Mega Charizard X ex Ultra-Premium Collection and several Prismatic Evolutions Elite Trainer Boxes.
In total, the shop estimates losses of roughly $15,000.
New Store Suffers Major Loss
The robbery comes at a particularly unfortunate time for The Card Lab. The business had only opened its doors two months before the incident occurred.
Store owner Ronnie Hackett said he was relieved that the store manager was not standing behind the counter during the robbery. While the financial losses are significant, avoiding injuries or a confrontation with the thieves was considered the most important outcome.
Following the burglary, the store temporarily closed in order to install additional security measures and upgrade its surveillance systems.
Pokémon TCG Continues to Attract Criminal Attention
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. Trading card stores across North America have increasingly become targets due to the soaring value of Pokémon products.
Demand for sets such as 151, Prismatic Evolutions, and Ascended Heroes has fueled a thriving collector market. At the same time, certain cards have reached extremely high prices on the secondary market, making them attractive targets for thieves and organized resellers.
Popular chase cards, including Umbreon VMAX alternate art from Evolving Skies and Pikachu ex Special Illustration Rare from Ascended Heroes, continue to command significant value among collectors.
Large-scale buyouts at retail stores and thefts from local card shops have become more common as interest in the franchise remains exceptionally strong.
More Pokémon Products Are Still on the Way
Interest in the Pokémon Trading Card Game shows no signs of slowing down. Upcoming releases are expected to keep collectors engaged throughout the rest of the year.
Pitch Black, scheduled for release on July 17, will introduce Mega Darkrai, while the upcoming 30th Celebration set is expected to feature reprints alongside a brand-new Futuristic rarity.
While these releases are exciting for fans and collectors, incidents such as the robbery at The Card Lab highlight the darker side of the hobby. As Pokémon cards continue to rise in value, many stores are being forced to invest in stronger security systems to protect their inventory and staff.
For collectors and local game stores alike, the hope remains that enthusiasm for the hobby can continue without criminals turning valuable cards into easy targets.
