Hytale has received its first major early access update, introducing new creatures, extensive bug fixes, and a noticeable wave of quality-of-life improvements. The patch marks an important milestone for the sandbox RPG, signaling a faster and more consistent development cadence moving forward.
Released just days after launch, the update includes more than 80 changes spanning content, crafting systems, combat balance, stability, and interface improvements.
A Comeback Years in the Making
Hytale officially entered early access on January 13, following one of the longest and most turbulent development journeys in recent sandbox game history.
Originally revealed in 2018 after development began in 2015, the project gained massive attention before being acquired by Riot Games in 2020. Development later stalled, and in June 2025 the project was officially canceled.
In an unexpected turn, Hypixel Studios founder Simon Collins-Laflamme re-purchased the rights in November 2025 and rapidly reassembled a smaller, independent team. Within weeks, the studio launched a standalone early access version, supported by a successful pre-purchase campaign that the developers say secures roughly two years of continued development.
Console versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are currently under consideration but have not yet been confirmed.
First Major Patch Signals Faster Update Cadence
On January 17, the studio deployed Hytale’s first major update since early access launch. With roughly 80 fixes and changes, the patch establishes a clear focus on rapid iteration rather than long gaps between updates.
The developers have stated that this cadence will prioritize three core areas:
- New gameplay content
- Stability and performance improvements
- Quality-of-life enhancements based on player feedback
This update represents the first step toward that ongoing approach.
Dinosaurs Arrive in Underground Jungle Biomes
The most notable content addition is the introduction of dinosaurs and new NPC types found within underground jungle biomes.
At this stage, these creatures use placeholder behaviors and limited interactions. The team has confirmed that deeper AI systems, animations, and gameplay mechanics will be expanded in future updates.
Players should also note that dinosaurs will only appear in newly generated, unexplored areas, meaning existing worlds may require travel beyond previously discovered regions.
Major Crafting and Quality-of-Life Improvements
A large portion of the update focuses on smoothing early and mid-game progression.
Key improvements include:
- Backpacks now require lower-tier crafting benches
- Reduced leather costs for upgrades
- Faster leather processing times
- Crafting benches can now pull materials from chests placed farther away
- Numerous tooltip clarity improvements
- Adjustments to item processing and crafting flow
Together, these changes significantly reduce friction in inventory management and crafting progression, areas that players had widely flagged during the first days of early access.
Combat, NPC, and Gameplay Adjustments
Several gameplay systems also received balance and behavior updates, including:
- Adjustments to NPC knockback and fire resistance
- Improved creature pathing and behavior logic
- Combat tuning across multiple enemy types
- Additional audio effects and particle feedback during encounters
These tweaks aim to make combat feel more responsive while laying groundwork for deeper enemy mechanics in future patches.
UI, Server, and Stability Fixes
The update also includes a wide range of technical and interface improvements:
- UI adjustments to sleep timing indicators
- Expanded information clarity in the Memories system
- Server command improvements
- Scripting fixes affecting multiplayer behavior
- Numerous crash fixes and performance stability improvements
While less visible than new content, these fixes address many early access issues reported by players during launch week.
A Promising Start for Early Access
With its first major update arriving just days after release, Hytale appears to be entering early access with momentum rather than uncertainty.
While many systems — including creature AI and biome depth — remain in early stages, the rapid rollout of fixes and quality-of-life improvements suggests a development approach focused on iteration, transparency, and rebuilding long-term trust with the community.
If this update cadence continues, Hytale’s early access period may prove far more active and responsive than many players initially expected.
