Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen players have received a welcome surprise following a recent Pokémon Home compatibility update. The update introduces a free Celebi reward for players who complete the Kanto Pokédex. However, what should have been an exciting anniversary bonus has also highlighted a frustrating problem with the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 versions of these classic Pokémon games.
While players can finally obtain Celebi through Pokémon Home, they cannot actually transfer the Mythical Pokémon into FireRed or LeafGreen. This limitation raises questions about whether Nintendo and The Pokémon Company intend to make the National Pokédex fully completable.
Pokémon Home Offers Free Celebi as a Special Reward
The latest Pokémon Home update introduces a special reward for players who complete the Kanto Pokédex in Pokémon FireRed or LeafGreen, excluding Mew.
Once players meet the requirements, they can claim Celebi through the Pokémon Home mobile application. The reward gives collectors another opportunity to obtain the rare Mythical Pokémon without relying on older distribution events.
For longtime Pokémon fans, Celebi remains particularly significant. Originally introduced during the second generation, the Psychic- and Grass-type Pokémon was historically difficult to obtain through ordinary gameplay.
Unfortunately, there is a major catch.
Celebi Cannot Be Transferred Into FireRed or LeafGreen
Despite being awarded for completing the Kanto Pokédex, Celebi cannot be transferred back into Pokémon FireRed or LeafGreen.
The Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 ports support local wireless trading between compatible consoles. However, they do not support trading with original Game Boy Advance cartridges or importing Pokémon from Home.
This means Pokémon Home effectively operates as a one-way destination for Pokémon originating from these games.
Players can receive their Celebi reward inside Home, but the Pokémon remains unavailable within the very games that unlocked it.
For casual players, this restriction might not seem particularly important. However, for collectors attempting to complete every Pokédex entry, it creates a much bigger problem.
The National Pokédex Remains Out of Reach
One of the biggest attractions of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen is the opportunity to complete the National Pokédex, which expands beyond the original 151 Pokémon.
The original third-generation games featured 386 Pokémon across multiple releases, including Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen.
Completing the National Pokédex traditionally required extensive trading between these games. Certain Pokémon were exclusive to particular versions, while others depended on special distributions or additional hardware.
The National Pokédex certificate requires players to register 380 Pokémon, excluding the six Mythical Pokémon from the completion requirement.
That distinction is important because Celebi and Jirachi are not required to earn the certificate. However, obtaining all 380 required Pokémon still presents a serious challenge under the current restrictions.
Ruby and Sapphire are not currently available as Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 ports, leaving players without access to several Pokémon that originally depended on trading between third-generation games.
Since the new versions cannot communicate with original Game Boy Advance cartridges, players cannot simply use their existing collections to fill those gaps.
Even if Nintendo eventually releases Ruby and Sapphire, the company would still need to ensure that the necessary trading functionality exists between the different games.
Pokémon Home Compatibility Does Not Solve the Problem
Pokémon Home was designed to connect Pokémon collections across generations, making it easier for players to preserve their Pokémon and move them into supported games.
However, its implementation with FireRed and LeafGreen introduces an unusual limitation.
Players can move supported Pokémon out of the games, but they cannot bring Pokémon back into them.
This restriction prevents collectors from using Pokémon Home to obtain missing species that would otherwise be available through their existing collections.
It also means that receiving Celebi does nothing to address the missing National Pokédex entries inside FireRed and LeafGreen.
The reward is certainly appreciated, but it does not resolve the underlying compatibility issues.
Nintendo Needs to Address the Missing Trading Options
The return of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen should have been an opportunity to preserve the original third-generation experience while removing some of its outdated hardware limitations.
Instead, the current restrictions risk making certain completion goals impossible.
Players should not need to depend on unavailable games, discontinued distribution events, or unsupported hardware connections to complete content that already exists within a re-released title.
Nintendo and The Pokémon Company could potentially address these problems through expanded trading compatibility, additional Pokémon distributions, or changes to Pokémon Home’s transfer functionality.
However, neither company has confirmed plans to introduce these improvements.
Until something changes, completionists are left with a frustrating situation: they can revisit the Kanto region, complete its regional Pokédex, and collect a free Celebi, but they cannot fully complete the broader third-generation collection.
The free Celebi is a nice anniversary gesture, but it also demonstrates how much work remains to make these classic Pokémon games fully accessible to modern players.
