Players hoping to enjoy multiplayer in Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 are currently out of luck. FromSoftware has announced that online services for both games have been temporarily disabled following an unspecified server issue. The disruption affects PC, PlayStation, and Xbox players, leaving several of the franchise’s most recognizable multiplayer features unavailable.
The announcement was made on October 30, with FromSoftware apologizing for the inconvenience and promising to provide further updates. However, the developer has not revealed what caused the problem or when players can expect online functionality to return.
Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 Lose Multiplayer Features
The temporary shutdown affects several important online systems that have helped define the Dark Souls experience over the years.
Cooperative multiplayer is currently unavailable, meaning players cannot summon friends or other adventurers to help them overcome particularly challenging bosses. This also removes one of the more accessible ways for struggling players to progress through difficult encounters.
Player invasions have also been disabled, preventing the unpredictable PvP encounters that frequently turn an already dangerous journey into an even greater challenge.
Additionally, players can no longer rely on the familiar message system, which allows adventurers to leave warnings, hints, and occasionally misleading advice throughout the game world.
These features have remained an important part of the Dark Souls community, even years after both games originally launched.
Single-Player Gameplay Remains Unaffected
Fortunately, the shutdown does not prevent players from enjoying either game.
Both Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 remain fully playable offline, allowing players to continue exploring, fighting bosses, collecting equipment, and progressing through their adventures without interruption.
However, the absence of multiplayer functionality may make certain encounters more difficult for players who regularly depend on cooperative assistance.
For veterans who prefer tackling every challenge alone, the temporary shutdown may have little impact on their experience.
Other FromSoftware Games Appear Unaffected
At the time of the announcement, the server problems appeared to be limited to Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3.
There have been no indications that Dark Souls Remastered or Elden Ring are experiencing the same disruption.
The fact that the issue affects multiple platforms suggests that the problem is not limited to an individual console network or PC service. However, FromSoftware has not provided enough technical information to determine the underlying cause.
It is also unclear whether the shutdown is related to maintenance, infrastructure problems, or another technical complication.
FromSoftware Has Not Announced a Restoration Date
For now, players will have to wait for further information.
FromSoftware has acknowledged the situation and confirmed that updates will follow, but no estimated restoration date has been provided.
Until the servers return, Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 will remain primarily single-player experiences.
Although the games are still fully playable, losing cooperative multiplayer, invasions, and player messages removes an important part of what makes the Dark Souls series unique.
Hopefully, FromSoftware can resolve the issue quickly and restore the online features that continue to bring players back to these challenging adventures.
