Modern Warfare 4 Pays Tribute to Vince Zampella

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 includes a touching tribute to Vince Zampella, one of the most influential figures in first-person shooter history. Players who complete the game’s campaign will encounter a brief dedication honoring the late developer.

The message reads “In Memoriam — Vince Zampella”, acknowledging the man who helped establish Infinity Ward and shape the Call of Duty franchise.

Geoff Keighley shared the tribute on social media, drawing attention to this respectful acknowledgment of Zampella’s legacy.

Remembering the Man Behind Modern Warfare

Vince Zampella was born in October 1969 and spent roughly three decades helping shape the gaming industry.

In May 2002, he co-founded Infinity Ward alongside Grant Collier and Jason West. The trio previously worked on Medal of Honor: Allied Assault before establishing a studio that would change military shooters forever.

Under Zampella’s leadership, Infinity Ward developed several groundbreaking titles, including:

  • Call of Duty (2003)
  • Call of Duty 2 (2005)
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007)
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)

These games helped establish the foundations of modern military shooters. Their influence remains visible across the industry today.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was particularly important. It introduced a new generation of players to cinematic military campaigns, progression systems, and competitive multiplayer experiences.

A Difficult Departure From Activision

Despite his contributions, Zampella’s relationship with Activision eventually deteriorated.

Only months after Modern Warfare 2 launched, Activision dismissed Zampella and fellow Infinity Ward co-founder Jason West.

The dismissal resulted in a legal dispute, with both developers filing a wrongful termination lawsuit against Activision.

After approximately three years, the dispute ended with an undisclosed settlement.

However, Zampella’s career was far from finished.

Respawn Entertainment and a New Beginning

Following his departure from Infinity Ward, Zampella co-founded Respawn Entertainment with Jason West.

The studio eventually introduced several successful franchises, including Titanfall and Apex Legends.

Respawn also developed the acclaimed Star Wars Jedi series, demonstrating its ability to deliver compelling single-player experiences alongside competitive multiplayer games.

In January 2020, Electronic Arts expanded Zampella’s responsibilities by placing him in charge of DICE.

By 2021, he had taken responsibility for the broader Battlefield franchise.

His leadership helped guide the development of Battlefield 6, which launched in October 2025.

Sadly, Zampella would not live to see the long-term future of the franchise.

The Gaming Industry Lost a Legend

Vince Zampella tragically passed away following a car accident in December 2025.

His death shocked developers, colleagues, and players across the gaming industry.

Infinity Ward publicly acknowledged his contributions, emphasizing the special place he held in the studio’s history.

Industry figures, including Geoff Keighley and Andy McNamara, also shared tributes celebrating his achievements and the personal impact he had on those around him.

For many developers, Zampella represented more than commercial success. He helped establish studios, encouraged new ideas, and contributed to games that millions of players continue to enjoy.

Modern Warfare 4 Honors Its Roots

The inclusion of Zampella’s name at the end of Modern Warfare 4’s campaign carries particular significance.

Without his contributions to Infinity Ward and the original Modern Warfare games, the franchise might look very different today.

Although his professional relationship with Activision ended under difficult circumstances, his influence on Call of Duty cannot be overlooked.

The tribute is simple, but it recognizes an important part of the franchise’s history.

Rather than introducing an elaborate memorial sequence, Infinity Ward chose a short message that allows players to reflect on the developer’s contributions.

A Legacy That Will Continue

At GamingHQ, we believe developers who helped shape the industry deserve recognition, regardless of the companies they eventually worked for.

Vince Zampella contributed to some of the most recognizable first-person shooters ever created. From Call of Duty and Titanfall to Apex Legends and Battlefield, his work reached millions of players worldwide.

His career also serves as a reminder that the people behind our favorite games matter just as much as the franchises themselves.

Modern Warfare 4’s dedication may only last a few seconds, but the legacy behind those words will remain for generations.

Rest in peace, Vince Zampella. Thank you for the memories.
