Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to become one of the biggest entertainment launches in history. However, when GTA 6 finally arrives on November 19, millions of players will still be unable to join the hype.
Despite enormous demand surrounding Rockstar Games’ next open-world blockbuster, GTA 6 will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That leaves PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC players outside the gates on day one.
And when GTA 6 Online eventually arrives, additional restrictions could reduce the number of players able to access the multiplayer experience.
GTA 6 Is Heading Towards a Massive Launch
Interest in GTA 6 has remained enormous throughout its development. Recent showcases have only increased expectations as Rockstar reveals more of Vice City, its characters and the scale of the new open world.
The latest extended look also appears to have given hesitant players another reason to prepare for launch. Pre-orders remain a major focus, while GTA 6 is expected to drive additional PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S hardware sales.
Considering the extraordinary success of GTA 5, expectations for its successor could hardly be higher.
GTA 6 has the potential to break major launch records when November 19 finally arrives.
There is just one problem: not everyone will be invited.
PS4 and Xbox One Players Are Being Left Behind
Rockstar currently plans to release GTA 6 exclusively for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
That means there will be no PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version.
The decision is hardly surprising. Both consoles originally launched more than a decade ago, and GTA 6 is being developed around considerably more powerful hardware.
However, millions of players continue to use those older systems.
Anyone hoping to play GTA 6 at launch will therefore need a PS5 or Xbox Series console if they have not already upgraded.
For one of the most anticipated games ever made, that creates a substantial barrier to entry.
PC Players Will Also Miss GTA 6 at Launch
PC players are facing a different problem.
Rockstar has not announced a PC version of GTA 6 for November 19. The confirmed launch platforms remain PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
A PC release later would hardly be surprising given Rockstar’s history and the enormous PC audience for Grand Theft Auto. However, until Rockstar officially announces one, there is no confirmed GTA 6 PC release date.
That means even players with extremely powerful gaming PCs could find themselves watching console owners explore Vice City first.
It would not be the first time Rockstar has taken this approach.
GTA 5 originally launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013 before reaching PC in April 2015. Red Dead Redemption 2 similarly arrived on consoles in October 2018 before its PC release in November 2019.
Whether GTA 6 follows a similar timeline remains unknown.
GTA 6 Online Is Another Big Question
Buying the correct console might only solve the first problem.
Rockstar has still revealed relatively little about the multiplayer side of GTA 6, including when players will actually be able to access it.
Recent court filings have provided one particularly interesting clue. Documents connected to Rockstar reportedly referenced an online format supporting 32 players.
That could point towards GTA 6 Online supporting 32-player sessions, although the wording should not be treated as confirmation of the final multiplayer structure.
More importantly, Rockstar has not announced an official GTA 6 Online release date.
GTA 6 Online Could Arrive After the Main Game
Rockstar already has a history of separating its major multiplayer launches from their single-player releases.
GTA 5 launched on September 17, 2013, while GTA Online followed on October 1. Red Dead Redemption 2 arrived on October 26, 2018, with Red Dead Online entering beta approximately one month later.
GTA 6 could follow the same strategy.
However, there is currently no guarantee that its multiplayer component will appear within weeks of launch. Predictions suggesting GTA 6 Online could slip into 2027 remain speculation unless Rockstar provides an official timeline.
For now, November 19 should primarily be treated as the confirmed launch date for GTA 6 itself.
Age Verification Could Create Another Barrier
There is another issue beginning to surround online gaming: age verification.
Governments and regulators in several regions are introducing or considering stronger age-assurance requirements for online platforms and services. Depending on how those rules develop and how gaming companies implement them, some players could eventually be required to verify their age before accessing certain online features.
That potentially creates another barrier for GTA 6 Online.
Players who cannot complete the required verification — or simply refuse to provide the requested information — could potentially lose access to parts of the online experience in affected regions.
However, Rockstar has not announced a universal age-verification requirement specifically for GTA 6 Online.
Until official requirements are published, the impact remains uncertain.
GTA 6 Could Be Huge While Still Leaving Millions Behind
The strange reality surrounding GTA 6 is that both things can be true at the same time.
It could become one of the fastest-selling games ever released while millions of interested players remain unable to play it.
PS4 and Xbox One owners need new hardware. PC players currently have no launch version. GTA 6 Online still lacks a confirmed release date, while changing online regulations could introduce additional restrictions depending on where players live.
None of that appears likely to stop GTA 6 from becoming a blockbuster.
But when November 19 arrives, the biggest gaming launch in years will not necessarily be accessible to everyone waiting for it.
