Rulebound will no longer launch in September as originally planned. The development team has decided to move the full release until after Steam Next Fest, giving the team additional time to polish the horror game and introduce several major improvements.
The delay is not simply about fixing bugs or adding some final polish. Rulebound has received substantial gameplay upgrades during development, including an entirely new platforming system and more intense jumpscares.
Players will also get an opportunity to experience these additions before launch. A first demo is coming soon, followed by a larger showing during Steam Next Fest.
Rulebound Moves Beyond Its September Release Window
Rulebound was originally targeting a September release. However, the development team has decided against rushing the game to meet that window.
Instead, the full launch will take place after Steam Next Fest.
The extra development time gives the team an opportunity to deliver a more complete version of Rulebound while expanding several parts of the experience.
Some of those improvements have already become considerably larger than initially expected.
Among them is a completely new platforming mechanic.
Rulebound Is Getting a New Platforming System
One of the biggest changes coming to Rulebound is its new platforming system.
According to the developer, the mechanic is already proving to be an exciting addition to the game. It expands what players can do while exploring and introduces another gameplay element beyond simply navigating environments and dealing with the horrors waiting inside them.
The developer also has additional context to share regarding why platforming was added to Rulebound and how it fits into the wider gameplay experience.
That information should provide a much better look at how substantial the mechanic really is.
For now, however, it is clear that the additional development time has allowed Rulebound to grow beyond its earlier design.
More Terrifying Jumpscares Are Coming
Rulebound is a horror game, so the scares remain an important part of the experience.
The extra development time has allowed the team to introduce additional jumpscares while improving the intensity of existing horror sequences.
Rather than releasing the game in September simply to meet the previously targeted window, the team wants the final version to provide a richer and more intense experience.
Fortunately, players will not need to wait for the full release to see what has changed.
A Rulebound Demo Is Coming Very Soon
Before Steam Next Fest begins, the developers plan to release an initial demo version of Rulebound.
This early demo will allow players to test some of the new mechanics and, importantly, provide feedback directly to the development team.
That feedback will then be used to improve the game ahead of its Steam Next Fest appearance and eventual full release.
Steam Next Fest will essentially become an important testing ground for the updated version of Rulebound. Players will be able to experience the new mechanics firsthand, while the developers gain valuable information about what works and what may still need improvement.
It means the delay could ultimately benefit both sides.
Players get an opportunity to influence the final stages of development, while the developers receive considerably more real-world testing before launch.
Rulebound Could Also Appear During Steam Scream Fest V
Steam Next Fest might not be Rulebound’s only major Steam event.
The game has also been submitted for review to participate in Steam Scream Fest V.
Participation has not yet been confirmed, so players should not consider Rulebound’s Scream Fest appearance guaranteed. However, if Valve approves the submission, it would give the game another major opportunity to reach horror fans.
The timing could work particularly well.
With Rulebound appearing around Steam Next Fest and potentially Steam Scream Fest V, the developers would have an opportunity to showcase the game’s new horror mechanics during one of the most appropriate periods of the year.
The team is also teasing additional spooky surprises for the season.
The Rulebound Delay Could Be Worth It
Delays are rarely the news players want to hear, especially when a game was already targeting a release in the immediate future.
In Rulebound’s case, however, the additional development time is already producing tangible changes.
A new platforming system, additional jumpscares, further gameplay improvements, an upcoming demo, Steam Next Fest participation, and a possible Steam Scream Fest V appearance mean there is plenty happening before the eventual full release.
Most importantly, players will soon be able to judge those improvements themselves.
The first Rulebound demo is expected to arrive very soon, allowing the community to test the new mechanics and provide feedback before the game’s larger Steam Next Fest showcase.
Rulebound’s full launch will then follow after Steam Next Fest, with an exact release date yet to be announced.
