Microsoft may finally be ready to unveil one of Xbox’s most anticipated features. After months of rumors, new reports suggest the company’s Disc-to-Digital system could make its debut through the Xbox Insider Program in the near future. While Microsoft has yet to officially announce the feature, multiple industry insiders believe the reveal is getting close.
Xbox Insider update sparks speculation
Rumors gained momentum after Xbox Insider Program Lead Brad Rossetti announced that preview builds had been temporarily paused while the team prepared something new. He didn’t reveal what was coming, but the timing immediately caught the attention of several well-known Xbox insiders.
Windows Central editor Jez Corden responded to the announcement by saying, “Positron commeth.” Positron is believed to be the internal codename for Microsoft’s Disc-to-Digital project, leading many fans to believe the feature is finally approaching its public debut.
Although neither Rossetti nor Microsoft confirmed the connection, the timing has fueled speculation across the Xbox community.
What the Disc-to-Digital feature could offer
According to previous reports, Disc-to-Digital would allow players to authenticate eligible physical Xbox games and receive a digital license linked to their Microsoft account.
Instead of inserting the disc every time they want to play, players could launch supported games digitally once ownership has been verified.
Current rumors indicate the feature will support Xbox One and Xbox Series X physical games. Original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are not expected to be compatible due to technical limitations.
One of the more interesting claims is that the digital entitlement remains connected to ownership of the physical copy. If the game is sold or transferred, the digital license would reportedly move with it, preventing duplicate ownership.
Preparing for Xbox’s digital future
The rumored feature arrives as Microsoft continues pushing toward a more digital ecosystem.
Reports surrounding the company’s next-generation Xbox hardware have suggested future consoles may no longer include a disc drive. If that proves true, Disc-to-Digital would provide a way for existing Xbox owners to continue using their physical libraries without purchasing the same games again.
For players who have invested in physical collections over the years, the feature could become one of Microsoft’s most consumer-friendly additions.
A different direction than PlayStation
The rumors also come shortly after Sony announced plans to stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs beginning in 2028.
While Sony appears focused on an all-digital future, Microsoft’s reported approach would allow players to preserve the value of their existing collections by converting eligible games into digital licenses.
If the feature launches as rumored, it could help ease concerns about the industry’s gradual shift away from physical media.
Microsoft has not confirmed the feature
Despite the growing excitement, Microsoft has not officially announced Disc-to-Digital or confirmed that the upcoming Xbox Insider update is related to the rumored project.
For now, players should treat the information as speculation. However, with multiple insiders pointing toward the same feature, it may only be a matter of time before Microsoft reveals what it has been working on.
